3D Airwolf Helmet

So I bought this Airwolf helmet STL off of Cults3D. It wasn't the greatest, there are some accuracy issues and it is pretty rough looking because of the facets, but for 5 Euro, you can't go wrong...I hope. When dealing with mechanical square types of objects, I don't have much trouble with that, but when you have organic rounded designs, modifying them is definitely not my forte. But I will try.

The helmet STL comes in 2 pieces, and I asked the artist for the unsegmented helmet, but he replied that he didn't have the files, so I'm thinking this may not be his design, or he may have just lost them.

I can't find any measurement information on the net, so I will just size it to fit my head. The model didn't come with the lower neck part. Some castings I've seen come with them and some I've seen are made with fabric. I think I saw one of the original episodes of the show, where it didn't have the lower part, but I can't be certain.

I'm trying to make the innards of the helmet have the ability to have an opening/closing visor and red targeting LED in front, but I'm wondering if it's worth it, for an inaccurate helmet. The helmet will have to be sized larger so that the visor will have an 'alcove' to where the visor retracts, so a internal shell will have to be constructed so as not to interfere with the movement (or cutting my nose off) and yet have some padding to fit the head properly.

Have you made any progress with this? I am considering buying the model since it appears to be a near impossible to source file.

No. The problem with this model, is that it is chunky and facetted. The detail should be sharper. The internal part is not designed to take a visor. However the overall dimensions are ok, but it will take a LOT of work with reshaping it to make it more accurate. It will be a good project if someone has a lot of time on their hands.

I did notice there are several 3D files available whether it's on yeggi, cults3d etc. I still have the pep file on my personal laptop at home, if you want to go that route.

The one I have pictured is the Cults one. There is one on CGTrader that seems to be higher resolution, but it looks like the neck is designed so thick that it can't be wearable unless enlarged. Then you would look like one of those Funko figures. I guess it would be ok for display only.

It would be nice if someone could design a 3d printable helmet that could accommodate electronics, a movable internal visor and still be wearable.

I can print it any scale. I picked something that would look nice on a desk for collectors who don't have a lot of room to display things.

I can still make vacuformed shells

I will take the Pep file also. Need SOMETHING to play with at this point.

As per your assumption of their not being neckfoam - looks like S1 screengrabs confirm that:

But also looks like it might have been multiple helmets that just got tossed around the Bell cockpit(s)
Shadow of the Hawke (pilot) :

And again shows both:

the reason being when you search in the various airwolf forums that talk about the helmets, the ones with the black foam neck ring are actually the "HERO" helmets with the moveable visors, targeting hud etc, the other no neck ring ones are shells with a headset in them. also none of these are mine, just pictures and screen grabs i have collected over the years.

Hey thanks for the lesson. To be honest, only know about as much from watching the show lol

My expertise lies in Ghostbusters props lol

dont know how accurate this model is but if the helmet is accurate, it appears to have the visor.... i could have a go at making it functional and 3d printable if anyone has the files.

I can't comment on the accuracy of that helmet, but the same artist is selling a helmet on CGTrader. From the pictures it looks ok from the outside, but the pictures of the inside look like there is no way a person's head will fit in. The reviews of one buyer reflect very poorly, citing the small size and problems with the geometry.

@adamski427 , you're asking someone to share the files of a licensed creation so that you can modify it and either sell or give away the result? Not cool.
