Since I was 10 after seeing Star wars in the cinema, I have wanted my own R2D2.
Fast forward 36 years and he is nearly mine.
I was going to try and keep the budget under £1000 and use all resin parts and a cheap homemade dome but I managed to get an aluminium dome off someone at the R2 builders website and this is pushing the budget up to nearer £2500 :eek
pends so far:
Dome £300
Senna Wood frame £150
Skins £64
Shoulders £25
Rockler (lazy susan) £40
Coin slot, front vents and large data port (resin) £36.00
Utility arms £80
tools £50
Paint £200
Aluminium logic surrounds £80
Lighting kit £200
Radar Eye £30
Octagon Ports £25
Bluetooth speaker £15
Booster covers £20
battery Boxes £75
Other resin parts £100
Awaiting
Aluminium Holoprojectors £235
Feet £350
Skirt £125
I got the Senna wood frame Off of ebay, It came with no instructions but plenty of videos on youtube to help me out.
Then onto the Skins, Strangely skins I have seen normally come in 2 parts - (inner and outer) but this was a single layer cnc'd skin
Skin wrapped and secured by straps and then screwed to wooden frame
My new friend
Test fitting some resin parts
Next onto the shoulders, My woodworking skills are non existent so I managed to get these from a fellow R2 builder. As this is going to be a static droid on 2 legs, I am using a single steel threaded rod to attach the legs to the body (I can change this later if I change my mind for a 3 legged droid)
Test fitting the dome on the "Lazy Susan" and the body
As you can see from this pic, the outer dome is sitting too high on the inner dome which meant I had to cut about a quarter of an inch off the bottom of the inner dome.
What a nightmare this was, tried tin snips but could not get a straight edge. In the end I used my trusty dremel and about 20 reinforced cutting disks.
Next job was to cut out and label (in secret code ) all the removable panels on the dome.
After about 4 weeks this is where I am at the moment
Just waiting for more parts to arrive and I will continue with the build
