Building R2-D2 Update, 3 Years and Finally Finished

Since I was 10 after seeing Star wars in the cinema, I have wanted my own R2D2.
Fast forward 36 years and he is nearly mine.

I was going to try and keep the budget under £1000 and use all resin parts and a cheap homemade dome but I managed to get an aluminium dome off someone at the R2 builders website and this is pushing the budget up to nearer £2500 :eek

pends so far:

Dome £300
Senna Wood frame £150
Skins £64
Shoulders £25
Rockler (lazy susan) £40
Coin slot, front vents and large data port (resin) £36.00
Utility arms £80
tools £50
Paint £200
Aluminium logic surrounds £80
Lighting kit £200
Radar Eye £30
Octagon Ports £25
Bluetooth speaker £15
Booster covers £20
battery Boxes £75
Other resin parts £100

Awaiting

Aluminium Holoprojectors £235
Feet £350
Skirt £125

I got the Senna wood frame Off of ebay, It came with no instructions but plenty of videos on youtube to help me out.

Then onto the Skins, Strangely skins I have seen normally come in 2 parts - (inner and outer) but this was a single layer cnc'd skin

Skin wrapped and secured by straps and then screwed to wooden frame

My new friend

Test fitting some resin parts

Next onto the shoulders, My woodworking skills are non existent so I managed to get these from a fellow R2 builder. As this is going to be a static droid on 2 legs, I am using a single steel threaded rod to attach the legs to the body (I can change this later if I change my mind for a 3 legged droid)

Test fitting the dome on the "Lazy Susan" and the body

As you can see from this pic, the outer dome is sitting too high on the inner dome which meant I had to cut about a quarter of an inch off the bottom of the inner dome.

What a nightmare this was, tried tin snips but could not get a straight edge. In the end I used my trusty dremel and about 20 reinforced cutting disks.

Next job was to cut out and label (in secret code :)) all the removable panels on the dome.

After about 4 weeks this is where I am at the moment

Just waiting for more parts to arrive and I will continue with the build

Re: Another R2-D2 build

wonderful!

I am sooo interested in a R2 myself, but can't justify all the extra expense for having the parts shipped from the states.
Or are there any reliable sources for all parts within europe?

Re: Another R2-D2 build

I've wanted to build an R2 for a long time.. it's one of the first things I thought of when I got interested in props. I think I've been put off by the size of the build and the amount of details and research needed. Have been starting off with smaller projects. This has really got me thinking about it again! Liking the build photos, it's good to see how it's constructed. I'm going to check out that uk astromech forum link. Looks great, nice job so far.

Re: Another R2-D2 build

Thanks guys!

Andy, If I can do it anybody can. Lots of really good instructions on the Astromech forums, members are really friendly and will help each other build the droid they are looking for.

Re: Another R2-D2 build

This is the part I was really dreading, (apart from telling the wife how much R2 is costing), Cutting holes in the inner dome.
I purchased some hole cutting saws from ebay and went to work

After about 10 mins I had this

Not exactly what I was expecting but at least it helped.

So after about 5 hours of sawing, cutting , filing, swearing and nearly losing a couple of digits I have a dome with a load of holes, Yippee!

And surprisingly, they all line up correctly :D

Another update soon

Re: Another R2-D2 build

great build!...really coming along:)
there's just something about these little droids that just makes you want one. I've finally begun on my dream of owning one, the wife has given in & accepted the fact that there will be droids roaming the house lol.

Re: Another R2-D2 build

Nice work on the build so far...Looking forward to seeing the final product...BTW....How's that Dr. Pepper Zero? lol...We don't have it here in the states...

Re: Another R2-D2 build

Small update!
Was hoping to get some more painting done this weekend but the weather forecast says thunderstorms :angry

Anyway, some more parts turned up, and I test fitted the octagon ports and they fit great

also, I have sorted Artoo's sound system out so he now has a voice
I purchased a small Bluetooth speaker - this one (R2 blue- of course)

It is really excellent, really loud for a little speaker.
I have an application on my android tablet for R2's actual sounds and this means sounds can be individually played or set on random and he will happily chat away to himself

I did manage to paint his "head band" and screw a piece of white plasticard (styrene) behind the utility arm slots
So here he is at the moment.
