Stargate Universe Destiny Potential 3d printed model

Hey everyone. I've been wanting to do this for a while and I'm trying to get the ball rolling. I'll soon have access to a fairly high end 3d printer and I've been wanting a decent size (24" or so) lighted model of Destiny from Stargate Universe. Same for The City of Atlantis from SGA, but that'll be a different project. I figure this is my opportunity. I know there are some great 3d meshes out there (not for download though, at least not that I've found. I found one but it wasn't even close to done.) from some sci-fi 3d modelers out there, but I haven't seen one in real physical form (other than the one Joseph Malozzi posted on his blog). My goal is to either create, with my limited but growing 3d (cinema4d) modeling skills, a mesh of the Destiny with good enough detail for a good 3d print which I could then light, or to find someone who has a good 3d mesh that they'd like to contribute. I'm open to any suggestions people have. I have never done 3d printing before so I know there'll be a learning curve, and it won't happen overnight, but I know when all's said and done I'll have something to display that I'll be quite proud of, and when I have everything done, I'll be happy to do kits for others as well.

To get the ball rolling I edited together most of the Destiny shots from SGU season 2 into a video (link below) for reference.

What do you think? Any help is always appreciated.

Bump to see if there is any interest/expertise that could assist in getting the ball rolling here. I was able to make contact with a guy in Germany with a beautiful 3d Destiny model (made in Cinema4d) that he may be willing to share with me for this project. Not sure yet though. Has anyone here had any experience printing on 3d printers, specifically things designed in modeling software like c4d, 3dsmax, maya, etc?

wow, this could be an epic project. I'd pay good money for an accurate destiny model. Similar to the one in brad wrights office. Joseph Malozzi posted pics of it. That was the size I'd be interested in. Pretty sure it'd have to be printed in blocks and glued together due to the size. Dig this one on this site. Note the cool nameplate on the side. Love to make one of those too.

Thanks for the interest. I still don't have a definitive commitment from the modeler, but I'm hoping that we're close. With TheEmperorsHand involved, all we need to get started is the model. Looking forward to this one. I really believe that 3d printing will open up endless new possibilities for modelers and prop builders.

FYI, the modeler that I'm in touch with is Barroth1989 over at deviantart. Please feel free to take a look at his model on his deviantart page and tell him how great it is. Very hopeful he'll agree to work with us on this project.

Well, I have exciting news. Barroth1989 has agreed to contribute his mesh of Destiny. I should have it next week. Looks like this project is a go!

jockdeboer: I don't know. At this point it's totally up to the ship's designer (Barroth1989) and TheEmperorsHand who will be converting the model to be printed. If they are ok with it we may offer something, but I don't know what the economics of it would look like either. Much more to come in the future though, stay tuned.

would be so awsome ;) i want one
would you mind try and make a bigger kit of the BC304 asswell ihave one in my closet but its to damn small scale 1/2500 if i'm correct

Well, it looks like we've hit a snag with Barroth1989. I haven't heard a peep from him in over a week. I'm going to make contact with another modeler at Deviantart by the name of Alxfx. He does amazing work and hopefully he'll be willing to contribute to this project.

there is a destiny shuttle and some destiny pieces on shapeways. Anyone know who TomPerys is? They say "not for sale" which is totally lame. But based off the shuttle cost, you'll be looking at almost a grand for a destiny model. Pretty steep. Shuttle says "big shuttle" and its about 2 inches long. That to me doesn't seem all that "big".

I'm always amazined when, after a lifetime of looking at sci-fi space ships, I fall in love with a new design.

The destiny was one such design

---- Yea, for me Destiny from SGU and Liberator from Blakes 7 knock the pants off any other ship to have hit the screens

anyone seen this? Talked to the dude that's making this and it's pretty sweet. He's making a 9in destiny and shuttle as well as a 16in destiny. His practice cast of the 9in looks amazing. He sent me a couple pics of it and it's amazing. I've seen some destiny wireframe 3d models and his seem like he somehow got them from the show. His page says it's going to be around $700 for a completed and painted model shipped. Thinking i'm going to be saving some dough. He even made the collectors under destiny. they look as amazing as the rest. Also note the bridge piece too. Woot!!

Here;s the link to his test copy.

Hi, what type of printer are you using, silicon bonding, abs layering or stereolithography? Silicon can create good detail but is really weak. Abs layering is stronger but you end up with ribbing and carbon fibre effect over everything that is impossible to get rid of over detail areas and many small details are lost. Stereolithography is the best for detail and strength.

Well folks, things aren't looking too great for this project right now. Here's Alxfx's response: "no paycheck - not intrested." I asked him what he would want to be paid and he blew me off, as did Barroth1989. It's too bad the people most needed are totally unwilling to help out. My hope is to design one myself down the road, but it's a big project and will take a lot of time. If any of you are able to get in touch with anyone that has a viable 3d model file that we can use, that would be huge. I'm willing to pay a reasonable fee to use the file, just to save the countless hours it would take to do it myself.

captainreynolds: The Printer is a uPrint SE Plus. It prints in ABS plastic. Yes, there is a bit of a stair stepping effect, but it's minor. The resolution is quite good really.

sciroccojunky: That looks really nice. Pretty much what I'm trying to do here. $700 is way too steep for me though. Definitely not in on that.
