Scratchbuilt AT-ST with an Easter twist...

Since the LEDs and some other parts I need for my A.o.S. Bus-build I wanted to do something else.
I promised myself something easy after I finished the Halifax yesterday. Yeah... sure...

Another forum I frequent holds an Egg-plane group build every year around easter. I don't have an egg-plane in my stash, so I decided to do something different...
I proudly present the scourge of the vile Rebels and fuzzy forest creatures alike...

The AT-ST!!

Uhm... ofcourse I mean The AT-EGGsT!!
IMG_0076_zpsacc7acd6.jpg

What? You think the safety of the Eggpire is a yolk? I find your lack of faith disturbing...

Plotting out parts on a simple side-view drawing...

IMG_0071_zps321bbf43.jpg

Old-fashioned carbon-paper to transfer the drawing to some 0.5mm styrene sheet to make templates...
IMG_0074_zps9de00210.jpg

Template one... three more to do...
IMG_0075_zps13a5da27.jpg

Transfering all four terplates to the 2.5mm styrene sheet with the help of some push-pins and a scribing needle...
IMG_0077_zps4f1e99ef.jpg

All the templates transferred and given a wash...
IMG_0078_zps5acc32ea.jpg

Ye olde fret-saw and jig...
IMG_0080_zps2fa2ed0e.jpg

First part done, only a gazzilion to go. No pressure...
IMG_0081_zps04b77293.jpg

A pile of parts that need to be cleaned up. Which leads to...
IMG_0082_zpsde31e6dd.jpg

...powdered egg everywhere... on the workbench...
IMG_0083_zpsa589d297.jpg

...and even more on the floor...
IMG_0084_zps743f22b3.jpg

But I guess you can't break a Rebellion without making some legs...

:D
Rob

"Day Two. They still think I'm an Ewok... I'm not sure it's the hair that convinced them, or the smell..."

Aaaaaanyway... legs all done. I fattened up the upper parts with a differently shaped layer of 2mm styrene on each side, and put a piece between the two shims of the leg-part below that to fill it out. I'll greeble the legs up later along with the rest of the structures when they are all done.
IMG_0086_zpsa29c3365.jpg

Made a template for the "shoulderblades" that attach the legs to the drive unit. Actually made two, one a tad smaller then the main one.
IMG_0088_zpsa33bfa48.jpg

Two shoulders done. The middle layer is the main template, the top and bottom layer are made with the slightly smaller template to make the thing look less massive. Probably not cannon... but meh. It's my egg. As you can see I also made them less wide in the end compared to the templates.

Figuring out the shape of the drive unit...
IMG_0097_zpsb520c08a.jpg

Box! I mean drive unit... part of it anyway...
IMG_0098_zps1c56dc41.jpg

The rear of the drive unit has a very recognizable shape, and two very prominent exhausts. So, we make holes.
IMG_0099_zps8d677fa5.jpg

So glad I have a set of lock-smith files...
IMG_0101_zpsace78b7b.jpg

Stainless steel axle... nothing is good enough for my egg-walker...
IMG_0104_zps0c696db1.jpg

Shoulder on.
IMG_0105_zps20f3e53a.jpg

Hmmm... now this shows promise...

Rob

Another day, another update. I actually quite like where this is going... so I am sure I am going to regret it at some point...

I angled the bottom of the box upwards and filled in the sides, then started to add more layers to the sides, leaving a space for the "shoulders"...
IMG_0106_zpsfdf7e66e.jpg

Three layers in total, all getting smaller and smaller...
IMG_0108_zps32ab653f.jpg

...on both sides, making the sides 8mm of solid styrene thanks to Tamiya ET...
IMG_0107_zps51e3741b.jpg

Scribed and washed in a centerline on both sides...
IMG_0109_zps777c2491.jpg

...and a lot of fettling, filing and sanding later, you get this...
IMG_0110_zps49c46bd9.jpg

IMG_0111_zps39b93566.jpg

Out comes the box of greeblies! I made a small selection of the more promising ones.
IMG_0112_zpsc815b5d5.jpg

"Didn't you just make that whole boxy thing?" -"Yup..." -"The one you spent a few hours on, glueing, filing and sanding?" -"Yup..." -"And are you now cutting a great big hole into the front!?" -"Ayup!..."
IMG_0113_zps8c2616d0.jpg

"Don't worry, I'm gonna fill it with... stuff..."
IMG_0114_zps761d00ac.jpg

Lots of stuff...
IMG_0115_zpsdd7f12fb.jpg

Hard to identify stuff...
IMG_0118_zps4dcdc222.jpg

IMG_0117_zps8a645f38.jpg

Everything looks better with primer...

IMG_0120_zpsa6e8d7a4.jpg

What the cluck!?
IMG_0125_zpscbc62230.jpg

Tomorrow I am going to do something unspeakable to that egg...
Rob

Well... I've been staring and tinkering with it for an hour tonight... I have to translate a topless piramid/box shape to an egg-shape, making it look AT-ST-like and egg-like at the same time...
Yeah... that's gonna be interesting. I -think- I have the right idea, but only a lot of tinkering tomorrow is going to prove me right...

...or terribly, disastrously wrong...

I can hardly wait!

:D
Rob

This is egg-straordinary work! I guess you've got to egg-speriment to make it look like an egg and an AT-ST, hopefully, you'll hatch a plan to get it right.
That's all yolks.

Today, we make yummy, yummy filled eggs!

Well, maybe not -that- yummy... Expanding foam is expanding! All over the place!!
IMG_0129_zpscce21fdb.jpg

I fished them out of the gooey mess and taped off the holes to let them expand and harden a little more. Took them about an hour to cure.
I used normal builder-type insulation foam from a can.
IMG_0130_zps10b85c7e.jpg

An hour later; 1 bad egg, four good ones. The bad egg somehow managed to expel all the foam I pumped into it... weirrrrrd...
IMG_0131_zpsd8ce655c.jpg

Now... the task of translating an odd-angled box-shape into something that still resembles both...
IMG_0132_zpsc9975f11.jpg

Here's how that inner dialog went while I was pondering the problem last night as I lay awake in bed...

Rob: "Hey Rob's Brain! Come on, I need your help!"
Rob's Brain: "Wut? I'm busy..."
Rob: "I need to translate this odd box-shape into an egg, without the box losing it's distinct boxey-ness, while gaining a definite degree of eggtitude..."
Rob's Brain: "You what!?"
Rob: "I need. To translate. A box-shape. Into an egg-shape. Without the box losing it's distinct boxey-ness. All the while gaining a definite degree of eggtitude..."
Rob's Brain: "Eggtitude? That's not even a word!"
Rob: "Yes it is. I just used it."
Rob's Brain: "You made it up! Just because you made it up doesn't make it a proper word!"
Rob: "Fine. It's not a proper-proper word. But can you help me?"
Rob's Brain: *sigh* "Fine... here's what you do... *long-winded explanation* Can I go back to what I was doing now?"
Rob: "Yeah, fine. Thanks... What were you busy with anyway?"
Rob's Brain: *indistinct muttering*
Rob: "What..?"
Rob's Brain: "Thinking up fanfic featuring Scarlett Johanson as the Black Widow, fighting a super-villain that uses mind-control and a gun that sprays feromone-laced acid that desolves clothes..."
Rob: "You're a freak..."
Rob's Brain: "Hey, I'm -your- brain..."
Rob: "Touché..."

Sooo... I made a straight front and back for the body, with holes for the egg...
IMG_0133_zps1274e9c0.jpg

Tapered the holes and fixed them to the egg at an angle...
IMG_0134_zps09097eb4.jpg

I cut a load of strips from 1mm styrene..,
IMG_0136_zps6cfd6e34.jpg

Then I started adding curved bits of strip to the to the top, following the curve of the egg underneath. First one, starting in the middle...
IMG_0137_zpse4ed7cfe.jpg

...then two and three...
IMG_0139_zps69ea3597.jpg

...and onwards untill we reach and overlap the end...
IMG_0141_zps4728270b.jpg

Then I laminated strips of 0.5mm styrene on top. Tamiya Extra Thin melts it down goooooood...
IMG_0143_zps54538add.jpg

...and I did the whole thing...
IMG_0145_zps35d99d00.jpg

And this is now all trimmed, sanded and quite solid!
IMG_0146_zps2f3a9207.jpg

IMG_0147_zps085d4929.jpg

Only three more sides to do in the same way... and then it's time for putty and sanding.

Rob

I made eggcellent progress the last few days, filling out the eggy box-bit with an extra rib for support...
IMG_0148_zpsd9b9b315.jpg

...and adding more layers of styrene...
IMG_0149_zps12c06da1.jpg

...smooooooth styrene... (and my workshop/man-cave looks like I'm a very messy coke-addict... white dust -everywhere-...
IMG_0150_zpse391866e.jpg

...but it's getting there...
IMG_0151_zpsef8206f7.jpg

Yeah... proper eggtitude almost achieved...
IMG_0153_zpse3b23cef.jpg

Rob

That looks eggsemplary Rob..
Nice and smooth finish. How's your nose?? All the dust snorted up? :) :)

Are you going to add more detail to the legs?
