Re: Obi Wan Kenobi spinoff film..
Meh, another anthology movie that doesn't need to happen but if they ever do it, I'd at least like to see them do a more personal, introspective type of tale restricted to events on Tatooine. I still wish they'd quit needlessly delving into established characters and explore new ones like they originally said they were going to do. I guess it's easier to mine material from existing legendary characters than create new ones. Next I guess we'll see Yoda open a successful travel agency during his exile on Dagobah or something...
The problem with sticking to Tatooine is having a film with consequences...but where those consequences won't make galactic waves. This would require not so much an introspective film as much as a "personal stakes" film. Like, a fight that nobody but the people involved care about, but for them, it's REALLY important.
I could see Kenobi being the Kambei character in a Seven Samurai on Tatooine movie. I would watch the hell out of that. Grizzled, tired veteran of war organizing some oppressed moisture farmers, inspiring them to stand up against raiding Sandpeople or extortionist Hutts or whatever. Yeah, sand guerrilla Kenobi. MAKE THIS MOVIE.
That's actually a really good fit. You could even work in some conflict with the Lars family.
When Ben said "He didn't hold with your father's ideals; he felt he should've stayed here and not gotten involved."
I remember watching "Legends of the Fall" where a family of farmers where broken up during the first world war because one wanted to fight, and the other not getting involved.
I always imagined a Young Anakin, maybe in his 20's, arguing with his brother, Owen, about following this bearded knight off to become a Jedi and fight in the war. Owen a pacifist farmer, and Anakin bored and wanting adventure.
All this ruined with the introduction of Annie "yipee" Skywalker.
They can remedy the Owen/ Ben conflict.... They can make this REALLY GOOD.
Right, but the way to do that is to have Obi-Wan and Owen meeting each other after Luke is living with him (e.g., like, age 6 or something), and them having some kind of discussion, maybe about how Anakin never should've joined the Jedi, never should have fought in the Clone Wars, because, if he hadn't, the Empire wouldn't be after his kid and the Lars family wouldn't be in danger. That's where the "not gotten involved" part could come in, and it doesn't require any interaction between Anakin and Owen at all.
I don't think that this becomes a story about Obi-Wan gallivanting across the galaxy. I think this has to be a more contained, small-scale Tatooine tale. The "Seven Samurai"/"Magnificent Seven" thing could work, but I think the problem would be that the moment Obi-Wan pulled out a sabre, he'd be in deep Bantha fodder. None of that means he can't use the Force or use other weapons, but you have to walk a pretty fine line.
IF Obi-Wan is related to Rey (e.g., her grandfather), then this is also the film or series of films where you can actually show him move away from the more ascetic teachings of the Jedi, fall in love, and maybe end up walking away from it to keep the mother safe, which in turn leads to her abandoning Rey for similar reasons.
It could work.
