Okay, had a chance to snap a few pics and string my thoughts together.
The presentation of this replica is fabulous. The dark wood box is ever-so-slightly grungy and aged looking, which fits perfectly with the straw packing and weathering of the prop itself. It gives the blaster an almost western feel, which goes with Jack's time-travelling mercenary image.
The WH logo on the box is subtly faded enough not to damage the effect too much.
The display stand/plaque is nicely designed and overall maintains the quality with an impressive 1cm thick acrylic base.
Now the gun itself - it's very, very cool indeed. Unsurpisingly, it's beautifully cast and painted, the dark wood-effect grips matching the box.
It has a very nice 'cold' feel in the hand and a decent enough heft for a resin prop.
My only minor quibbles with the prop are entirely personal. The weathering, while well done, is heavier than I would have gone for, but as previously stated, matches the overall presentation.
I also would have preferred the fingergrips/lanyard version, mainly as it differentiates Jack's blaster more clearly from River's.
It's terrific addiction to any Who collection, without a doubt. Obviously I would have preferred a lower price point, as stacked against the similarly priced Weta District 9 guns, also from original moulds, the sonic blaster doesn't come up as such good VFM.
I do get, though, that Nick is running a cottage industry that I'm sure has greater overheads than a big organisation like Weta. I would love to have been able to pick up River's blaster too, I think a repaint of my own Jack squareness gun build will have to suffice.
Overall, a very impressive start to Rubbertoe as a new Who licencee, and huge props (ahem) for getting these great pieces out without pre-order, and all the usual hullabaloo and vaguery we see from other licencees. A couple of weeks between announcement and arrival at my door. Unprecendented! Can't wait to see more from this company
