Your biggest prop "MISTAKE"?

It's the only prop I ever actually got, and I didn't buy it but it broke my heart!

It was a good few years ago... But I had spent months obsessing over the MR force FX light sabers. Vaders looked pretty cool, the green ones looked like crap.... I was after Luke's Blue saber... It was easily the coolest on offer. Like I said, months obsessing over it... Christmas came round, Ran downstairs, sure enough there was a nice long MR box right there..... With the words Luke Skywalker.... And the horrible looking green saber :cry

I hadn't the heart to tell my mom... It's right there on my wall, but I never take it down... It rarely gets played with. Someday I'll save up and get the blue one I always wanted... But just thinking about it still brings that horrible feeling of utter disappointment...

EDIT: I just did a little ebay search and it turns out that what I have is a "rare first edition" selling for £600... Man that box better be in the attic! :)

I bought one prop which I would consider a mistake- it was actually a part I needed for a larger custom build. The part was low quality and I sank $250.00 in it. OUCH.
A funnier story might be the time I was drunk and shopping Ebay- I paid $100 for an action figure because 'oh- that looks cool' and Guinness makes everything look even more cool.
 
In the early '80s, I bought a TOS phaser that a local comic shop had for sale. It was a solid-cast, took two 'AA" batteries in the top (the P1 was the cover for them, and wasn't removable otherwise). The thing was a little larger than it should've been, heavy, and, worse yet, didn't sound like a phaser at all when you pulled the trigger; more of a 'warbling' sound.

Plus, the design wasn't based on a *real* one, but rather the Franz Joseph tech manual one.

*sniff* I miss it................

My wife bought me a Krull glaive kit about ten years ago, but I was the one who actually ordered it.

It took almost a year of constant emails and harassment to get the guy to actually send it to me. When it arrived it looked fine enough, but it looked really small. I haven't been able to bring myself to build it, and I can't sell it because it was a wedding anniversary gift.
 
Back when Master Replicas released their very first FX lightsaber. The Anakin AOTC. My beloved girlfriend (now fiancé) was still at Uni, but knew how much I wanted one, she saved up 2 months worth of Saturday job money and bought it for me.

I was over the moon with it, but after some playing - I soon realised it was grossly oversized, the two halfs that connected wobbled, and the batteries only lasted 15 minutes (it chewed through them even when it was turned off)

Needless to say I was disappointed.

A few years later I picked up the ROTS Anakin and Vader - and the first gen Anakin acquired a new home in a dark recess in the back of my room.

I never forgot what my partner did to get me that prop tho.

There was a 1:1 Ark kit on ebay a few months back. it was a bit high on the pricing but I kinda regret not buying it. But had I, it would probably still be in the box anyway.
 
Not buying the actual 'Sword of power' prop from the Masters of the univers movie that was being sold on eBay a few years back.
 
From jackwad eBay seller monstertoys, an eBay purchase of a Jeremy Bulloch-signed Don Post Boba Fett helmet that stunk of cigarettes so freaking bad, even after days + days outside and weeks of treating it with baking soda and carpet freshener, that I eventually just donated it to Goodwill.

Sometimes I wonder if there is, out out there in cyberspace, somebody's forum posting about the signed Boba Fett helmet they scored at an Atlanta-area Goodwill, haha...

I read these three quoted posts yesterday in this thread, and they stuck with me all yesterday and again today until I had to come back and write about it.

You three guys, reconsider bringing your props out. I am not trying to give you a hard time - I understand your disappointment at what you got. Oh man, I've had (well-intentioned?!?) girlfriends give me garbage like the Star Wars: The Crystal Star novel and some bronze-colored Darth Vader action figure with removable helmet. Trust me guys, you came out far better.

But man, think about bringing those items into the light - they have some good stories to share when you have friends or family over. How awesome that your girl or your mom loved you enough to make such effort to get you something that they thought you were really into.

I say build that glaive, mount it a black-background shadowbox on the wall in your office. Smaller size is fine for that. You have a conversation piece with a good story tying together your fiancee and your hobby.

Display those sabers for the same reason. You can be open to them or guests about it, say 'well, it wasn't the exact thing I wanted, but then I thought about it and realized that a mom/girlfriend that loved me that much was just so cool.

Well, just my rambling, and thank you everyone for sharing your stories here, some good stuff.

You know what's funny Azrok? After I found this thread, and wrote my little contribution, I went home and dug it out :p

My fiancé was over the moon - she thought I had sold it ages ago :p - I've even got the original box and documentation :)
 
I bought a Judoon officer from Dr. Who Voice changing helmet. It was only £10, I thought it mite be cool. It was a load of rubish, visability is horrible, its just cheap plastic load of crap,lol.
 
I bought a complete Rubies Darth Vader (thanfully at a VERY LOW price, which included the mannequin). At least the pieces have served as "place holders" to let me know what needs to be replaced. See....Rubies props ARE good for something!!!!
 
Missing out on a screen cast Frank the rabit mask on ebay that went for 335 I got sniped at the last seconds,

And no it wasnt the POS the some one said the they got from the actor,
this was last week and the person who sold it wasnt even sure it was real but siad it looked close I studyed it for hours and there was no 2 ways about it it was legit, all I can say is if you sniped me , I hate you

Though the purchase I made a couple of weeks earlyer helped soften the blow some what

I think its pretty safe to safe if its rubies its no good, not for collectors, mabey for haloween and dress up partys , even then avoidable
