Here's the derby with modifications.

If possible, I would find a derby with the edge rolled under or with sufficient brim width to do so. Then take the ring to the edge, but under the rolled portion. Then you get the appearance of the screen pic and theoretical effectiveness.

A thought but that would call for a less than accurate Derby.

I would go for film accuracy (the riveted hat was a travelling display hat and was never used on set).

Ah' perfect!!! That makes so much more sense and eliminates the pesky options.

Feel free to PM me with any additional thoughts.

Very cool,

My only thought, is and has always been, if the blade doesnt extend out... how would it cut?

And when someone saw it, it would take alot more explaining if you get what im saying. At the same time a bladed hat that some friend of yours might pick up while you have your back turned... yeow! That wouldnt be good either!

Interested to see what you come up with on this. Deffinately a favorite bond villian of mine. :cool

Also interested in hearing more about the screen used piece if the mantis knows more! ;)

Rylo,

Many times I try to find that one great scene that really showed off the prop. For me the picture you posted is that scene. I would replicate the hat as it appeared there. Doesn't really matter if it's functional or not. Hey, most props aren't.

Agreed, that's the one I'm going with.

Cheers!

Okay, so I'm the odd man out.
My opinion would be to have it out to the edge.
Here's why:
When someone comes over to my place and they play with the hat, they'll recognize it.
When they pick it up they'll say, "But how is it supposed to cut?"
I'll say, "Well, that's how it appears in the movie."
"But...it can't cut this way."
"I know, but this way it's accurate to what you see on screen."
"But that doesn't make any sense."
"...shut up."

Perhaps the steel DOES go to the edge - it's just that the edge is covered over by the ribbon that goes around it - and which is missing in that auction pic.

Damn! I left the breathing thing in the hotel. All I have is these jam trousers.
