Worf's Uniform Sash

I am aware that in the early seasons Worf wore Kor's sash from Errand of Mercy. Roddenberry had saved it himself all those years.

Anybody know what the later one is made from, or is it a custom fab job.

I know the two little silver shapes were an off the shelf electronic doodad, but the rest?

There was a few posts about it over on ASAP.

I'm sure sarge will chime in, I think staples, washers were some how in the mix.

I have the electric game that he wore on it as well as his later badges.

I've been wanting to tackle this for a while. I don't think it was washers and staples though. I was thinking some round and split square aluminum tubing cut on a bandsaw.

Looks like a macro version of the old Magnetic Core Memory modules. ;)

I can see that it does indeed look like cut aluminum tubing and staples... if it was done by hand it's amazing work as it's super consistent work. Spacing, size and placement of bends looks almost machine made.

I don't think the square parts are staples. I think they're split aluminum tube as well.

As for the accuracy, I have a metal shop at work that could bust out even links like that in no time. I do agree about the workmanship though, that sucker must have taken a long time to build.

Oh, I definitely agree on being rather simple knocking out all of the pieces in a consistent size but as you noted, it's the assembly that's impressive. Like doing chainmail... I know I just don't have the patience to do that. :wacko

I think I could trance out and do the chain mail linking OK but I'd be worried about the ends of the sash. If you look at Worf's sash throughout the series, there was always this big snappy thing that joined it behind him, and the straps that are woven through it seemed to change length at the top of the shoulder no doubt to allow him to move etc. I think fitting it would be a royal pain.

I read an interview with the costume designer a while ago and it was said that all the pieces were picked up from a hardware store. I don't think it told what the exact pieces were though.

I do know that many hardware stores carry aluminum and nylon spacers that are that size. And it's not very difficult to make a sash like this. I made one a long time ago out of washers and stiff wire. And I've still got it. :)

I don't think the one in the picture was used on the show. Too chunky. The movies, perhaps.

I always had the impression that the grey fabric was akin to the cheap cleanup cloths you can get at the auto parts store.

I remember decades ago, thinking it was made from some existing mesh after seeing the same stuff on the "Blade" character from "Masters of the Universe" and the villain from "Cyborg", so I called up Maggie at Studio Art Metal to get the number for the maker, and she told me that it (the material) was handmade by slicing thick walled aluminum pipe into the rings, and connecting them with cheap belt keepers from Luggage and Handbag Supply in San Dimas.

They had to slice each ring, then de-burr and polish them on both sides. The leather was grey pigskin if I remember right.

Hope this helps! :)

Yes, that is the version from either DS9 or one of the movies First Contact or later. It's the only close up pic of Worf's sash I've seen though.

I have these that i took of a screenused one... Dont remember if it was from the movies or show.

I don't believe the sash changed from TNG to the movies or DS9.

Only the insignia on it changes from the smaller LED ones, to the larger ones that appear in Generations... then again when he joins the House of Martok.

Thanks for the great pics. Looks pretty simple to make, but time consuming I'm sure.

I know just where to look for those items.

For a display mannequin I did years ago, I made a plaster mold off of a floor mat from Sam's Club (anti-fatigue floor mat), and cast it in latex, then sprayed silver. Not exactly like the screen version, but a fast/cheap alternative. I'll dig around at home for any pics.
