WIP - TNG Isolinear Chips

All these chips look amazing. Glad I've found this thread. I just wish I had seen it earlier. There is so mush useful information here.

I want to build some of the "computer access panels" (for lack of a better name) as seen in Enterprise-D engineering.
Something like this:

For that I need a few isolinear chips. Some time ago I did some research and came up with a pattern. I tried laser etching and some different materials. Thats the result:

I think it looks great (just ignore the errors in the pattern and thats its only single-sided :lol).
But to get enough chips laser etching seem to expensive.

So I looked into silkscreen printing. I've found a local company to do the printing for a reasonable price (at least if you need a larger number of prints) and to match the laser results.
And while on it I decided to do some other colors as well, even if there are not screen accurate, but I liked it.
That the colors I decided to use:

So I ordered 32 acrylic sheets in 8 different colors in size 297 × 420 mm (DIN A3). On each sheet are 51 chips printed. And thats what I got today back from printing: :popcorn

BTW: In reality the chips and prints looks even better than in the pictures. The color depends on the angle, light and background you look at it.

The next step is to have these lases cut. I also found a company to do this. I will send it to them on Monday. Which gives me some time to prepare the labels. Of course each chip will get a unique label, half with the early season color-codes and circles the other half with the numbered labels.

I just have to find the time to build the frame and slots to put the chips into. But due to a job change in October this may take some time.

I will keep you updated.

Perhaps we can get cmdrTW's printer to do the screening for the "Enterprise Data Cartridges"

Those ISO's look grand!

I guess the printing company would do that. They asked me to send them pictures when the whole ISO panel is done. So it looks like there is some interest in that topic.

The main question for screen printing is how many prints do you need. Its only really reasonable if you need at least a few print. And think about printing multiple chips on one sheet and do the cutting afterwards. Thats why I printed on DIN A3. Otherwise they would have to insert each small acrylic glass part manually - thats way too expensive.

It's only a small company and I talked directly with the boss and the person doing the actual printing. If you are interested I can ask them, at least that is free. :lol

Hi

I really like the work, how if you want to post information on your own projects, could you please start your own thread. Otherwise people might get confused as to who is posting what. Not wishing to stomp on anyone, but i believe that is one of the rules of the forum.

At present I am waiting on my friend cutting me another set of iso chips, I have not been able to locate a decent green. Hopefully something will come up. In the mean time, I'm hoping the first set of things of the laser will be the season 1 TNG chips.

I will keep you all posted.

Hey all

Not been on here much as i've been working on my designs..Finally got some where with the chips. So thought i'd post up what i've been keeping busy with.

Finding good images of these 1st seasons chips has been a little tricky, so I've had to take a best guess at some of it. In some photo's I've seen, it looks like the image is upside down, I guess it's just to mix it up a little. After all they where a pretty simple looking prop to begin with. The only REAL visible part is the label.

The next one's I do, will have vinyl labels. I tried using paper on these, just to add a scruffy look to them, as the screen used props look that way.

sorry for being late buddy, here some pics to clear some up, it's very close, in fact I think they did with no true idea in mind. Sorry for the crude lines, you'll get the idea:

Thanks guys, I can't believe how close i came with the first test chips. I feel silly doing blank one's :p but i think i'll do them as they were used in the show. So keep watching this space! I'll be back with more, going to try doing some in the yellow i used for the other chips :)
