Here we go for my first WiP Thread documenting my attempt at a kid's version of the Spiderman Noir costume. My son has played Shattered Dimensions on his DSi for a while and he's really excited about the costume. I'm planning to have it ready for Ottawa ComicCon in May 2014.
We discussed which iteration of the costume he was interested in, the comic book one or the one seen in the game. There are some significant differences, most notably the trench coat-fedora look VS the sleeveless leather vest. There are also some differences in color (turtleneck being brownish instead of charcoal or black, depending on lighting).
I had him do a lot of the research work so he could get familiar with the costume options, and so he could decide on what he wanted his costume to look like.
With everything researched, we decided to go with a charcoal turtleneck, "leather" vest and mask/helmet, aviator-style goggles (on their way from HK to be hacked apart and reformatted), lace-up black combat boots (thank you Mart of Wal), and striped black and charcoal trousers.
We started with the helmet pattern, as this is the only thing we had the requisite supplies for at this time. So we got out the duct tape, markers, scissors and Kraft paper and got cracking.
First, we covered my son's head with a plastic bag, with allowances for breathing of course, and proceeded to apply strips of duct tape to establish a rough guide for the leather part of the helmet. I have to say that he was a lot better at being chill about the whole thing than I would've been...

We then proceeded with tracing the shapes of the different parts of the helmet, as seen in our reference pics (thanks go to Joshspiderman23 and Arkham666 for posting their build pics and refpics!) with a Sharpie over the duct tape. It essentially breaks down into 3 parts/shapes which get flipped over/mirrored to make up the other side.
Once that was done, we cut up the pieces and traced them out onto some Kraft paper to get a general idea of the shapes making up the pattern. A 5/8" sewing allowance was added around the edges so we could sew things up easier (thanks Mom!!). Most likely the extra will be trimmed when we're done sewing, but that's what we added.

The pattern will get cleaned up and "symmetrized" properly once I get some quiet time to think about it some (not easy to do with 2 kids running around...) But so far we've got the basic shape and size down with the rough draft, as you can see from the Kraft paper mock-up we put together below:

I've a mind to visit my local Tandy Leather Shop this weekend to see about getting some soft leather scraps to put this together. I've already got some sinew left over from my Steampunk stuff I did last year, so the "reinforcement" stitching is taken care of (other than actually doing it...). Refpics show that the helmet is sewn together along the seam line, then folded back and stitched over to flatten. Coarser stitching is done in contrasting color (the aforementioned sinew is natural in color, so beigy kind of off-white in color). We've not decided if we're going to actually sew the goggles right into the mask/helmet, although that would make it a lot easier to put on and take off... Ideas?
And speaking of the goggles, these are the ones we ordered:

The plan where they are concerned is to take them apart to replace the chrome with a more matte finish, or perhaps even a blued kind of look, and switch the lenses from one side to the other (as in left will become right and vice-versa) to bring them closer to the Spidey eyes look. Subtle difference, I know, but nevertheless it will look better in my mind.
That's where we're at right now... As I said earlier time to work on this is not exactly abundant so it might take a while to get more done but I wanted to share and see if the fine folks here had any pointers/suggestions/comments to help me along...
I'm actually thinking of using one of those cheapy Spidey masks they sell for $10 or so at ToysRUs for a face shield. I was looking at them recently and they would work pretty well if I were to cut off the part that would be under the leather portion of the mask. There was also a Snake-Eyes ask (you know, from GI Joe?) which was tapering to a finer, more defined chin shape... I might actually try both and see... Opinions? I know there are some killer face shields mad by folk here, but I'm trying to stay with stuff I can scrounge or find on my own (sucker for punishment I guess...)
Thanks for your interest in this thread!!
