WIP first Iron Man Mark III (plastic-coated) foam build: Getting a bit pic heavy

Great Job! I love the simple but effective color & b/w copies giving the arc reactor the detail. I am DEFINITELY going to keep that trick handy on my next builds! :):thumbsup

As everyone else has said, great build!

In particular, I really like the grooves on the shins and codpiece. They're really well defined! How did you do those, if you don't mind me asking?

Hey bud,

Thanks so much for the compliments! Sorry I haven't been on here in a little while. The lines were done with a hot knife with a "pen" type attachment. It's a "versa tool" by walnut hollow. I think you can find it on amazon.com or craft stores.

you basically carefully draw the lines on the foam, heat the knife up nice and hot, and CAREFULLY trace your lines about 2mm into the foam. It's a delicate process that you can really screw up if you don't practice ahead of time:) but you can always try to make mistakes look like battle damage haha

I luckily didn't have really any problems with it(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Thanks so much man. Also many many thanks for your great input on the helmet! your magnet scheme worked out awesome! I pretty much obtained the exact magnets you mentioned and they worked perfectly. Thank you for your help man, looking forward to what you might cook up in the future

cheers for the reply mate sorry about the non use of full stops lol interesting stuff much apprechiated :D

No problem man... I'm looking into docholiday's method for my next build. The plastic coating makes for a great finish, but if I can do it more simply I'd love to.

I'm very impressed by the clean cuts and look that you put into the Mark III.

The mark iii is my fave so I appreciate your feedback. The only thing I'd redo is a little bit of scaling and I'd finish up the shoulders. Overall very pleased though. Thank you!

What kind of foam are you using?

several sizes: 6mm, 4mm, 3mm, and 2mm eva foam sheets

the 6 and 4mm were from "wandy_foam" on ebay, and I found every size except 4mm in Darice "Foamies" from Joann fabrics. The foam from wandy foam seemed to be a better quality, easier to cut than the Foamies, but it's a tad more expensive.

Joann has sales all the time, so I got about 60 (9x12 inch) sheets from their website for 20$ at one point. hope that helps

Do you have any pics with the back of the suit with the flaps ? I might of missed it in this thread but I seen a couple of the back but it didn't have the flaps attached thanks.
