WIP first Iron Man Mark III (plastic-coated) foam build: Getting a bit pic heavy

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

Very nice finish you're getting there! Great job! I assume you're using the "Doc Holiday" finishing method? If so, I'm greatly encourage as that is the method I plan to use on my suit as well. Hopefully as early as Saturday… but we'll see.

hah no actually,

As much as I love the guy, I never was able to get his method down without having millions of little cracks. It's probably because at the time, it was about 90% humidity every day where I live.

I know there's alot of text in this thread, but it's back there... I used mostly XRobot's PVA+smooth-on+primer+paint. Except I used smoothcast 321 as opposed to XRobot's 65D. As I went through I got better at it, and now I wish I could go back and touch up some pieces, but I'm happy with it! Thanks for the compliments man

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

OK got bored and did a rough test fit with a few pics. the shoulders are being redone (color match problems) and no pieces are connected yet, so the arms are falling down and the legs are falling as well, so we had to grab these shots quick haha

As usual the color shown here isn't accurate for whatever reason. the pics just ain't doing it justice. very happy with the 321, will probably clear coat a few pieces once more in spots. just need shoulders, elbows, and hands (feet are done, just not pictured). Also need to come up with something for the gaps, maybe just throw some paint pen on some compression gear. enjoy!

ok so I made my own eye light kit out of some leds, plastic, and sunglass lenses.

trying to decide on the solid eye or the one with the pattern...
I know the pattern isn't movie accurate, don't really care though its kind of fresh...

or the patterned eye:

by the way, the eyes arent that blue in reality... the iphone does weird things with color so ive found

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

I kind of like the patterned ones. They are different and give the mask a bit of... umm I guess the word would be depth.

agreed thanks! I like them more too, i'm sticking with them

Might me easier if you don't attach the legs together. I've done both ways and I prefer non-attached. More mobility and you won't have your pieces torquing at each other. At one point I thought I ripped my foam but all that happend was the screw came out. Or you could use elastic to attache the quad to the shin. I did that with my bicep/forearm piece for my fiberglass build cause i couldn't move my arms very well with those pieces binded together. I don't think it makes much of a difference visually.

Hi, This is inspiring for me as I am in the process of building my own mark 3 as well. Just a quick question though, how "snug" is all of this supposed to fit? I am currently putting the lower fore arms together and there is enough space in there for my forearm and then some!

They said the files were scaled for a 6' guy and I am almost there, but the forearm size has me wondering now...

hey there,
I know the feeling... In hindsight I might try to build a forearm out of foam to be safe first. Some pieces fit huge before scaling! but after scaling they should all end up staying within 5-10% of each other most likely.

But to answer you directly, yes it is supposed to fit a little big. If they are just falling clean off of you, then yeah I'd say size them down for sure.

I am 5'11" and had to scale it down at least 10% overall. but then again, there are a few pieces that I wish I had built about 5% bigger.

I would say build a forearm out of scrap foam if you can, and see how it fits. you should be able to fit two fingers (side by side) or a little more between the piece and your skin, I'd say, in general... a good spot to check that is right around your wrist. that should be a pretty accurate fit in my opinion. Mine is a hair snug all around, but not to the point it looks ridiculous.

if you look at stills from the film, the mark 3 is kind of big looking, but (again in my opinion) the mark vi seems to fit even bigger... as in the early parts of the avengers.

I personally wanted a more fitted look, because I'm already a stocky guy...

This is a slightly contradictory video in which the mark vi actually fits the stunt actor not very huge at all... though the shoulders look fairly broad. this is what I'd shoot for:

fast forward to 3:43

well quick update, it's been very slow going with school... but I managed to do some very light weathering, not damage, but a look that it's been around the block a few spins...

just took some black acrylic paint, a hint of off white acrylic, a dab of water, a brush, and some paper towels to dirty it up a hair. It really gives it a much more real feel. I don't know if you can tell from the pics... anyway I just wanted to give it a slight bump. enjoy

ps: sorry didn't have anyone to take some pictures suited up, and still workin on getting the shoulders done haha

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

by the way is anyone has any suggestions on covering the backs of the knees, inner elbows, etc. without causing me to sweat to death, fire away!

I'm thinking of getting some red pleather from joann and fixing it up somehow. aaanyways

You could use craft foam painted silver between the joints?

Or if you are really good with an airbrush you could paint the gears and stuff on the under suit? They do it all the time with the costume you buy. That should fool people from a distance, and people would never be able to tell in photos.

I don't know why people choose to leave it blank.

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

Can't wait to see this done...

For the covers, there's a dude named dfx that had a good suggestion on his thread. It was like vinyl covers or something from home depot in the carpeting section.

Btw, if you put more black in the detail line areas it will have a visual effect of making those details "pop" a bit more in case you want to go for that effect.

Cool thanks man! big help as usual. I was thinking of coming back with a little more black, just to give it that final pop. I should be able to work on it this weekend during fall break
