Why 99% Of Movies Today Are Garbage

Is that a movie quote? Personally I rather enjoy leaning new things from film.
It's from the video in the first post in this thread. Go back and watch it as he means something other than what you seem to be thinking...

Are you referring to "your job is to entertain me, not lecture me" ? .... because that comes across very different. "Lecturing" someone has a pejorative connotation to it.

Okay, I quoted the wrong word. Sue me.
What he said it still very valid.
No worries man, I just thought it was a weird perspective.
I thought he had a lot of good points but sometimes he comes across as misty eyed longing for the good old days. Even he points out at the end it was a "rant".
Entertainment is subjective, what I want from it isn't the same thing someone else wants from it.
I stand by my initial reaction, it's hyperbole.

I was gonna post this over in the Book of BobaMeh thread, but tbh it might be better here.

Genuine question... I was laughing earlier at how StarWars has essentially transformed into Spaceballs in that its basically a parody of itself at this point... That made me realize something though...

Are Parody films like Spaceballs and similar a dead comedy film art form today? There used to be so many that would accompany big films in my youth, and I almost feel like with the continued dumbing down of media, the divide that separates would be 'parody' from the serious media has grown infinitely smaller..

Is this something that came from the Marvel films??

I think the scary movie series and all the spin off killed the parody films.. I loved the first 2 films.. then everything after that got dumb and dumber..

I can’t even think of the parody like that in todays age.. I’m probably forgetting something

Combination of factors.

It's not possible to be Mel Brooks today. Movies cost too much to make. And there is too much studio & popular pressure not to offend. The internet has become the outlet for edgy content.

The net also favors shorter clips. They can get widespread exposure and generate some money.

Look at many of Mel Brooks' classic movies - you see a lot of shorter skits being strung together with flimsy storylines. There is much less creative motive (and less audience demand) for that kind of movie in today's climate.

Parody films don't really hold up, they're a slice in time that requires the audience to know the material being parodied. Spaceballs is the worst of Mel's films I've seen (I've avoided Men in Tights). Ironically it's probably the least "offensive" by today's societal standards.

Never seen men in tights… I get enough frog eye on group rides 3/4 nights a week

Men in Tights is actually okay, but it's definitely not like his earlier films. I hold that his worst film is still Dracula: Dead and Loving It. There's funny moments in it but it is mostly terrible. Spaceballs onto Dracula, you see the gradual decline of his work; a lack of care in making it somewhat cinematic and a huge drop in production value. I hold little hope for his History of the World: Part II.

Well I grew up as a kid in the 80's with movies like neverending story - willow - legend- labyrinth - princess bride - goonies - dark crystal
secret of nimh - raiders of the lost ark - ET - Ghostbusters and empire strikes back

Which just had a deep routed feel to them that seems to be missing in most things these day ( no heart ) just look at old vs new muppet content
something is missing, now i am much older so age comes into play --- BUT i just do not like a lot of new content and i miss FX being used to enhance a story not drive the story

just my 2 cents .......

I grew up loving every single one of those movies. With two exceptions each one of them have one very important thing in common. They were all written and created as movies, not based on existing books, comics, or direct remakes/ reboots. They were all original content created by visionary filmmakers who took a chance. You don't see a whole lot of that happening anymore in big Hollywood productions. That's a huge part of their success and their longevity as films. They took risks that paid off.
