Who makes Mal's pistol from Firefly?

I'm thinking about buying a replica of Mal's pistol but the one from Quantum Mechanix is pretty expensive, does anyone else make them? I saw one made of resin on ebay but I've never dealt with resin, is it any good? Seems like resin would feel like plastic and wouldn't look realistic so hopefully I can find a metal replica. I'm also physically disabled so it would have to be painted already. I'll greatly appreciate any help you can give me, thanks.

I have one of Sgt Wilco's resin static replicas and it's absolutley fantastic. I've shown it to real gun owners and almost all of them accidentally toss it in the wait as their expecting a 4 pount shootin' iron and get handed a 4 ounce resin replica with a fantastic paint job.

I'd love to own a funtioning metal version but since I'm like 90% of the people around here and not wealthy a damned fine resin rep does me happily.

Is the RAC resin or metal? What's the difference between the tv and movie version?

I have a resin one made by phillipes, and it's a nice, solid, excellent looking piece. It's reportedly cast from the one used on the TV series.

Of course it comes as a raw, unpainted cast. So it needs to be cleaned up (ie the seams trimmed and sanded) and painted. If you know someone who can do this for you, I highly recommend going this route, as it's a beautiful replica.

The difference in the series gun vs. the movie gun is the colouring and the ammo clip.

It's resin. I think he leaves the knurled bolts painted brass instead of silver. There are marks from when one of his guys cut it up the piece he used as a master pattern to straiten out some parts and I think the cuts were not completely filled.

Glad I went back and checked the other pic as it seems that for some reason the flippy lever thingy is missing. I have a RAC casting and I know he has the lever part since mine came with the lever part...well after asking why I did not get one. A detail that seems to be included on this version that mine does not have is the hammer. Wonder why I didn't get a hammer.

With this in mind I woulld suggest that if you get one you get pics of the specific prop you are to receive to be sure that parts are not omitted.

I found this resin replica on ebay sold by Wilco Models, is this Sgt Wilco? He has Jayne's gun also. Would have to see more bigger pix of it and I'm still just researching the different replicas so please keep the info coming.

(Please do not post links to Ebay auctions unless ended.)

The licensed Serenity version is very reasonably priced for what it is. FYI, there are a few more differences and modifications than just the "clip".

Here's another one of Phillipe's resin cast pistols. I just recently picked it up in the JY.

Yes, it promises to be a very beautiful piece....whichever year we actually get it. :D

Here is one I put together on the Q&D for display at a Tempe collectables store. Sorry its blurry. In order to try and get some good indirect light while avoiding the reflection at the same time meant holding the camera in one hand and the frame in another.

Nobody is mentioning it, but a metal version will cost MUCH more than the QMX one. Any metal one would have to be a custom one-off, and that stuff ain't cheap at all.

The closest to metal you could get on the cheap is cold casting, where they put metal in with the resin so it can be polished and feels more like metal. It'll cost a bit more than straight resin, but it's still cheaper than full metal.

The most accurate alternative to the QMx (ignoring the fact that one is the movie version and one is the TV version) would be the ones offered by phillipes since they were cast from screen used. The Wilco Mal and Jayne guns are cheaper, but much less accurate.

So from what I've read here the best are Phillipes or Wilco but Wilco is a bit inaccurate. Does Phillipes have a website and does their replica come finished or would I have to find someone to do the work since I can't? Thanks for all the great info so far.

The Philippes is a raw kit that comes unpainted - sometimes you can find finished and painted versions in the Junkyard, but they are rare. Am unsure whether he still makes them - but you can find him here on RPF. If getting a kit, you would probably have to get someone to trim and paint it for you.

The Wilco kit also has to be painted.

Don't know about the RAC version... does that come painted?

They are no longer available from me.

I never made these, but handled them for a client/friend of mine. They were pulled from a mold taken off the screen-used hero.

The first 25% to 50% of the total I offered came from the original mold. The rest were pulled from molds made as needed taken from an early master.

I still have a few wooden grips lying around for those who didn't get them earlier. The price on those is $25.00 (shipped worldwide). I'm forever out of everything else.

No more Phillipes available so my options are an inaccurate Wilco tv version or the QMx movie version for $250. I was wanting a tv version but I watched Serenity yesterday and today and I dig that version also. Since I'm no model builder I think I'll have to keep checking the Junkyard for one that I like that's already built or possibly buy a QMx replica when it's finally released. Thanks to everyone who replied, I appreciate it.

For all intents and purposes, the Serenity model IS the Firefly model--only modified.

The shop that made the two hero guns for Serenity converted two Firefly hero guns they purchased from the Firefly production. In other words, the original unaltered Firefly guns no longer exist; they're now the Serenity pistols.
