Where to buy resin?

so I imagine the prices have changed since then.

Very well could have, Glenmarc is charging $437 for a 10 gallon kit of casting resin, I get the same from Dascar Plastics for $258 and I'm 100% happy with the way the Dascar resin is performing, that is a substantial difference... I liked the fact that Glenmarc was local but it's hardly worth dealing with traffic or my time to pick it up in most cases...

36XXX is the worst crap in the entire spectrum of two part pour-able resin.

All that stuff that weeps over time. Probably 36XXX.

The local company that sold/made it, Vagabond, had to move out of San Diego county because the stuff was so toxic it was not allowed to be sold in the county. I believe they got run out of California all together.

Run, run very fast.

On the Glenmarc site it states that they in fact manufactured the stuff for Vagabond and have now absorbed Vegabond and taken over distribution due to the California issues you stated as well as other circumstances...

That is why I'm surprised at how high their prices are if they are in fact the manufacture and you are getting it direct and not through a third party retailer...

One of my other local resin suppliers was selling some 'house' brand of 'stinky' resin and all the sudden stopped carrying it last year, I wonder if it's all connected...

This is unfair and completely untrue (probably works for another resin company) Our 36XXX formula is famous and used by the top model resin casters world wide. We have a very faithful following for over 15 years. It is a very high quality stable resin system that is used by professionals, always with no weepage. This person claiming it was oily or weeping (if they even really tried it) didn't know what they are doing, because if used correctly this is never the result. Also the statement about having to leave California is a complete lie! Vagabond had a distributor in Warner Springs, CA who after 20 years in the business decided to retire. At that point we decided to not replace the distributor and ship direct. Every month we sell to 100's of customer in California and many in San Diego, Just wanted to set the record straight. On the net anybody can say anything no matter if it is a complete lie or they have alternative motives. Glenmarc stands behind everything we sell with 1000's of satisfied customers as proof. We have a very faithful following for over 20 years. It is a very high quality stable resin system that is used by professionals, always with no weepage. This person claiming it was oily or weeping (if they even really tried it, as we could not find any records of a complaint from this person) didn't know what they are doing, or didn't mix it correctly, because if used correctly this is never the result. We have many casting formulas some made with aromatic extenders ( slight oil smell) some completely orderless (made with non aromatic extenders). If you have ever attended Wonderfest show (largest figure, monster, sci-fi resin model trade show in Louisville, KY) about 60-80% of the cast resin items at the show are made with our Vagabond casting resins. We also exhibit at Wonderfest to help support the show and modeling hobby.

Also the statement about having to be forced to leave California is a complete lie! Glenmarc Industries had a distributor in Warner Springs, CA (labeled the resin as Vagabond model cast) who after 20 years in the business decided to retire. At that point Glenmarc Industries decided to buy out the Vagabond distributor and not replace the distributor and ship direct. This was a decision made by Glenmarc Industries alone and based on logistics only. Every month we sell to 100's of customer in California and many in San Diego our 36XXX resin formula (same exact one that was distributed from Warner Springs, CA), Just wanted to set the record straight. On the net anybody can say anything no matter if it is a complete lie or they have alternative motives. Glenmarc stands behind everything we sell with 1000's of satisfied customers as proof.

You get what you pay for, Glenmarc uses only the highest quality USA materials in it's formulas from suppliers such as BASF and Huntsman.
We charge a very fair price compaired to our raw material costs.
Also you need to look at weights our $437 kit is over 85 pounds of resin and is our full retail price, and we do offer discounts for repeat business.
The Dascar price this author lists of $258 I beleive is not correct (I have customers that were quoted by this company and never given this price) and it is not the same quality resin formula at all as our 36XXX, plus you need to be careful I have seen some of the so called 10 gallon kits end up weighing only 60 to 70 pounds because they are loaded with cheap light weight extenders and additives. None of our Glenmarc formulas are loaded with cheaper extenders or additives and are higher cost to make because of this ( but higher quality).

I have props that are 10 and 15 years old made with 36XXX and have never had a problem with weeping. I first became aware of 36XXX because it was used at I company I worked for that made collectables that sold for as much as $1500 to $2000(and that is in 1995 dollars). They were not about to invest so much employee time and charge that price for a product that would only be returned for a refund.

I buy my Smooth On products from a local distributor call Reynolds Advanced Materials. If you have a Pearl Art Supplies near you they also carry Smooth On products. Some other art stores may also have a mold making or casting resin selection, but it won't be as varied as a specialized distributor

I have a reynolds right near me. its where i got my mold material from.

Will the Vagabond stuff work in a smooth-on mold? IIRC, smooth on resin in smooth on molds don't require a mold release, according to the distributors i've worked with over the years.

That is the one I go to as well. They can recommend products to use if people have questions. I wanted to buy every product they demonstrated in the casting seminar I went to a few months ago so I am thinking about going to the life casting one they have in September. I was also jealous of the guys who were buying 5 or 10 gallon buckets of material while I was there.
