Where do you put your finished costumes?

Hey guys. So I'm thinking of making an HEV suit from Half-Life 2, but I just thought of something. Where am I going to put it after I'm done? So I was wondering, what do all you other costume builders do with your costumes when they aren't being used?

Mine get hung up in a closet or folded and stored in chests.
This is easier for me to do than many other costumers, since most of mine are spandex or clothing and don't incorporate any rigid armor pieces except for a couple.

Mine are pretty much the same, Any Armour that can be hung in a closet, is hung on 3+ coathangers, as well as jackets, bodysuits and stuff, the rest in big plastic boxes in the cupboards above.

I've also got a torso and full body mannequin, I have costume bits on display on, and I'll rotate the costumes every couple of weeks so i get some variety.

I keep everything in labeled bins in a dedicated closet. Anything over-sized goes on the top shelf (or it's on display in our prop room - ie, all of our helmets), and I keep a few things hanging on hangers in another closet:

I'm lucky enough to have a room dedicated to the ones I've completed. It's kinda useless as there is nothing in the room, nor is it used for anything besides displaying the costumes, but heck at least they are on display on mannequins:unsure

I too have a dedicated room with mannequins, other props and small furniture. I even removed the doors & shelves from that room's closet and use that as a display space.

Right now, the few props I've made are on top of my small bookcase, so there's no more room there. And since I have practically no closet space, or room to put a mannequin, I guess I'd have to stick it in a box in the basement, or put up some display shelves to show off the torso at least. Do you think that would work/look ok for armor and other future props?

I use shelves mounted straight to the walls. No bookcases. The shelves can support a fair amount of weight since they are attached to the wall studs and I use an appropriate number of wall brackets. That is important for integrity & safety. Particule board shelves tend to bow, so real wood shelves would be best in the long run. Displaying a torso with or without a head is perfectly fine. You might want to get a pedestal or display stand for it.

I use storage bins for the costumes which are stored where I have room. The helmets are located in various places around the apartment. Once we get a house, we're making a helmet display shelf. I also plan to make a medium-rise loft bed to store the bins under.

That is the most organized closet/costume collection I have ever seen. I'm jealous! :thumbsup

Stuff that can't be wrinkled is hung up on a hanger in the closet. Armor is stored in the tote/box that I take it with on troops. Helmets are displayed.

Kelldar, I admire your organization :)

I have a cedar closet in my basement, half of which is dedicated to costumes. Though most of my costumes are fabric and easy to hang. I have a few armor pieces and weapons which I keep on shelves.

My TK i put in a bin, and my other cloth stuff i have in some duffel bags in the closet. I'll be doing another TK and turning this one into a TD and then ill be throwing that up on a mannequin.

Plastic storage boxes (the same ones are used for transporting them to events) a few are hanging in the closet.
The boxes are labeled as to the contents.

Guest bedroom closet - that which can be hung on hangers is. Each costume gets it own plastic tub for the parts that can't be hung on a hanger, accessories, shoes, etc. The tub is labeled with the name of the costume. The tubs are stored in the same closet.

On the inside lid of each tub is a list of all the parts of the costume needed to wear the costume, including parts on hangers, props, makeup, undergarments, etc. Makes it very easy to pack for cons.

The only thing I haven't figured out how to store is the Wicked Witch of the West's hat. It doesn't fit in the closet and it is way too wide to put on a shelf.

I display mine in the basement. I have a few different ways.

  1. For a jumpsuit type - I make a cutout of a human torso with head out of plywood. I drill a hole in the neck for a large nail. I use a piece of 2x12 as a base and a 2x4 as a post. I drill a hole in the 2x4 where the neck would be. The torso hangs like a hanger but provides shape.
  2. For armor - I use the same base and 2x4 but put torso cutouts on both sides.

same here. right now all i have is a generic Sith and Michael Myers, neither of which require a mannequin. Latex masks go on stands or are powdered, stuffed, and kept in boxes, and only until i get around to making stands for them.
if i had any costumes with hard parts(and i will eventually) i'd either store the soft portions inside/between them(sort of the opposite of how i pack my lightsabers for travel) or put them on a stand like Japanese armour.

I have a special room that I call my craft room that I keep everything in. All the costumes are on manikins which you can either buy or make with duct tape. Cheaper to just make your own with duct tape though. Then props and smaller stuff are just in bins. Hope this helps!
