What am I looking for? (hardware)

I'm looking for a type of tube or rod that's threaded on the inside in different lengths and diameters and would be possible to cut with a hack saw...

Something with a similar appearance to this:

Any idea what it's called as well as where I could buy some? My hardware store didn't have anything remotely similar..

Well, I don't know where you can buy it, but I have an idea on how to make your own.

You'll need some thick walled tubing and thread cutting tool called a "tap" Sears sells them in sets of different diameters. Here's a metric set http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00952378000P.

Tapping a tube should be nore more different than retapping an existing thread. Coat the tool in lubricant (wd-40) and slowly screw it into the tube. It'll cut it's own thread into the tube wall. You can make as many as you'd like in any size you'd like.

This won't help if you need long lengths, but.. It reminded me of an anodized u-shaped drawer pull (3.5 to 4 inches wide, and 1 to 1.5 inches deep) that I have seen before.

WD-40 acts as a tapping fluid only on aluminum.
(And a darn good one, too.)But it is terrible on steel.
Lubricants used on steel make the tap work harder and can lead to galling.
Motor oil is better than WD-40, but not by much.
A lubricant is designed to make a molecular shield between two metal parts.
So lubricants act to put pressure on the tap.
Tapping fluids like Tap Magic, Cool Tool or (my favorite) Ridgid dark pipe cutting fluid;
allow the tap to bite the metal in addition to lubricating the tap.

Yep a cheap tap and Die set will get you what you need...

Taps thread the inside of holes (make threaded holes and Nuts etc)

Dies cut the outside of rods and pipe (make bolts etc) ...

They are easy to use as long as you take your time. Like was said above lubricate while cuting and after cutting a revolution or two BACK IT OUT a few revolutions then go bakck in and CUT a few more. This has the effect of clearing the cutting debris from the work area making the entire process MUCH easier if only a little bit longer in time.

Depending on the size needed check your local radio control hobbyshop in the airplane and helicopter sections. They commonly have threaded rod and tubes in different thicknesses and diameters.

I was going to say the same, read your post last night at work on my cell Matt lol, if your thinking of using this for a certain pinch joint in plexi buddy :love I have the same idea, thread repair inserts, there not cheap, but come in all sizes and most threads, ive ordered some in M3, 4 and 5, so once they land, ill let you know the skinny my friend!

bests.....lee
