We NEED to get back to the BASICS

I'm getting quite aggravated with the way this forum is moderated.

At some point in our past some ill advised admin thought it would be a good idea to MOVE Active Projects and Interest Threads to the Junkyard

At the time some members of the RPF were applying incorrect titles to their threads.

Some people would call "Bulk Runs" Active Projects or Interest Threads.

At first the Administration just looked the other way but eventually it spread and a lot of people started to do it.

The Administration decided to just move all Active Projects, Interest Threads and Bulk Run Threads to the Junkyard.

It was the "Punish Everyone" mentality that is so often used by weak management.

If the admins had just spent the time correcting the members that incorrectly used the AP and IT titles we might not be in the mess we are in now.

I see so many failed projects and so many people start discussions that might last 10 replies if their lucky.

This forum has transformed from a builders forum to a buyers forum and that's not what The Replica Prop Forum that I joined.

Now, it's more appropriate to have hundreds of threads about licensed props in the Main Forum, yet an Interest Thread to discuss a new obscure prop gets shoved to the Junkyard.

I'm not sure but I think Active Projects still get moved to the Junkyard if someone accidentally mentions anything about price.

To me this is a very backwards way of thinking.

Lets allow the discussion of a licensed props which will have zero effect on said prop but lets disallow the discussion of replica props and parts in the main forum if they even hint at an exchange of money.


I almost can't stand logging onto this place.



Now, I have been here since 1999 and I FRACKING CREATED THE ACTIVE PROJECT THREAD, I still have the original post saved to my hard drive if anyone wants to see it. I also coined the titles of Interest Thread and Bulk Run Thread, so I am more then qualified to correctly define these threads.



So as far as I am concerned this is how I define the following threads:


Active Projects: Threads that invites the entire group of interested people to discuss everything about the research and production of a replica prop or part

Interest Threads: Threads designed to gauge interest for an Active Project and the best way to proceed it there is enough interest

Bulk Runs: Threads designed for the sale of singular items where there is no discussion.



I'm not saying that I invented the processes but I was the FIRST person to put a name to them and find a way to make them applicable to our hobby.

Once again, I must reiterate that it was poor moderation by the past admins that corrupted the definitions of these threads.


Too many people started to use the Interest Thread title for Bulk Run Thread and that's what caused a chain of inappropriate decisions


It's ok to start an Interest Thread for a Bulk Run but it must be label correctly such as:

TITLE - Bulk Run: MR POTC Aztec Coin

BODY - If I can get 20 people to commit to buying at least one MR POTC Aztec Gold coin I can offer them to the group for $8 shipped.

The first thread the featured the "Bulk Run" moniker was a thread I posted selling Denix Mausers for $45 shipped, I needed at least 100 mausers spoken for ended up selling 200 of them.


However, a true Interest Thread is designed to engage a group of semi interested people into discussing the feasibility of a project, the more it's discussed the more interest it generates, the eventual evolution of any IT is it's conversion into an Active Project.

As for getting tied up in semantics it's the admins that are tripping all over the rules.

As soon as they see the word "Interest Thread" in the title they feel it must be moved to the Junkyard.

I know their heart is in the right place but the ends do not justify the means.

I hate political analogies but your guys are like the Bush Administration.

You're trying to do the right thing but you just can't make it happen.

So I say let the forum openly discuss this issue to see if we need to rethink some of the decisions of the past administrations.

Hey David

While I won´t comment the way you expressed your feelings about this issue, I agree about the general content of your message.

I posted a few interest threads over the last year, mostly for resin casts of guns and pistols, to see if there´d be enough interest to justify a run/ the investment behind molding an item.

My believe is that they would have gotten more attention, if they weren´t moved to the JY immediately. :unsure

I also agree, that a discussion thread doesn´t automatically belong in the JY as soon as the possibilities of offering some machined parts (f.e.) appears in one post.

The problem is that David, while presenting valid arguements in favor of the threads, he gets the same response from the staff here every time. I am not sure why he feels thay will suddenly change their minds.

In some defence, I also believe that an "Active project" should be in the main forum and once the discussion starts to lean toward costs, then a seperate topic in the junkyard or OT should be made and no talk of money is involved in the Main forum thread.

The main forums do get more looks than the other forums. I would think the discussion about building said prop amongst the membership should stay in the main.

For what it's worth, I agree with BD too and would like to see more Active Project threads in the prop forum, and it makes sense to have interest threads that can grow into active projects.

Who cares what a thread is called.

And yes you are being overly dramatic.

Active Projects do belong in the main forum, and many have been left there happily in recent memory--including the current version of the Vibro Axe thread, the ancestor of which was the first RPF AP.

When they get to the point of money changing hands, people buying parts, or interest thereof being gauged, that is when they're moved to the JY (or split, or a new one created, or whatever). In the example of your BR parts thread, you're more than welcome to create an AP in the main forum about it. Just keep the ordering/interest-taking/selling/etc in your JY thread.

This is not a crack in the very foundation of the RPF, for pete's sake. It's just putting things in their place so that the main forum is about discussion and not sales. Not a big deal.

The Junkyard has been around for what, at least four years? I love ya, David, have enjoyed participation in some of your projects and respect the many things you have brought to the community--but the "keep harping until I get the answer I want" approach isn't going to work, and I daresay it is actually harmful to the community. You know where things are supposed to go, and you don't like it and post them wherever you please, as if you are an exception to the rules, then fly off the handle when they're enforced. This can't continue.

I don't think anyone's expecting you to understand or agree with the JY ever, but maybe if you accept what you cannot change we'll all be a lot happier.
