The reason I liked the ending is because I felt it was actually *more* King than the original. Sure, sometimes he tosses in a relatively happy / hopeful ending (relative compared to the horror of the story), but more often than not he just brutalizes the hell out of his characters right up to and through the ending.
Unlike the novella, the film ending painted the situation as a nightmare the main character was NEVER going to wake up from, despite the threat of the Mist being gone. That's horror.
