Wasan 1628 (Billing Boats Vasa ship) FINISHED

Re: Wasan 1628 (Billing Boats Vasa ship)

Sorry for missing your question Mike! It's made of cotton fabric soaked in distilled whiteglue.

Here's an update:

I carved the knights and other figures that where not included in the kit. It's carved in pear wood. I really enjoy carving.

The rudder is finished. Gunports and cannons are installed and I started on the masts and rigging:

Real hand-carved! : ) The investment in time and sweat you have put into this thing really shows, Nazgul. I see the old full-size ship in your paintjob.

Re: Wasan 1628 (Billing Boats Vasa ship)

that. is. BEAUTIFUL! Sorry haven't stopped by in a while but that is looking gorgeous! very well done.

Re: Wasan 1628 (Billing Boats Vasa ship)

I should have been following this thread much more - the ship looks amazing! I don't envy you the job of having to do all the rigging. I'm sure you'll do fine. If I tried it, neither the ship nor my sanity would likely survive the attempt...

Re: Wasan 1628 (Billing Boats Vasa ship)

You're going to have to point out to us what figures you hand carved.

Re: Wasan 1628 (Billing Boats Vasa ship)

Cheers Tom!

Mike, the woodcarvings are the seven knights on the weatherdeck, the mascarone on the rudder, the two hercules sculptures on the corner of the stern, the two tritons with red hats at the front end of the bow. The two round parts at the lower stern are't included either so I scratched them. The polishmen crouching below tables sitting under the cathead are also scratched by me.

Most of the plastic sculptures are thinned down to get a better scale. It's great that they are made in plastic and not metal as it's easier to shape and paint them.

Thanks Mike, I really enjoyed carving! Of all new stuff you get to try when building models, this felt really nice.

The amount of work you pour into this is.... hats off.

Yeah Mike Mars (or Jutehataren, Dane Hater , as she was called also) is is also fascinating. I'd like to build a model of it, when they know more.

Many thanks Yuumi!

Re: Wasan 1628 (Billing Boats Vasa ship)

Hey! time for an update:

Ive been continuing working on the rigging. Reshaping the deadeyes and scratchig the metal holding them takes some time. Added the bowsprit and it was some work to make the holes for the ropes holding it, as the kit is not correct and had to be modded to be closer to the original.

The mainstay collar is based on the real ships setup. There have been different ideas how this was done originally but this is the way the people at the museum have concluded it was done.

Such a cool ship. One of my favorites. It's really too bad that it sank almost immediately after putting to sea.

And your build of it is outstanding! Very nice work.

Now the true test of historical detailing: is the interior littered with tiny scale rulers with two different standards of inches on them? Just kidding, yours may even be better than the original.

She's breathtaking, Nazgul! Two years in the making -- it might seem a long time but really it's not. I probably wouldn't have gone past a hull in that timeframe, heheh.
