I added some trim to the torso and detailed the belt a bit. I also made the helmet about an inch narrower so I could turn my head a bit easier and remade the elbow armor in thicker foam. Gonna keep detailing the armor and start work on the backpack and bolter!
I made the boring bits for the backpack. The balls actually took a few tries to get right, so I wasted a lot of foam on failed attempts. It's not perfect, but with a lot of sanding I think it will be alright. Now I need to buy some more foam, then I can make the main part of the backpack.
Looking forward to seeing the backpack. I'm currently attempting one in paper/fiberglass. It's a real head scratcher as far as how much to assemble so there's rigidity but still access to the inside. I'm tempted to go a different way, but it has to look good.
I might steal the glove idea too, although mine is going to be only partial armor scaled down, so I'll have to see what looks good.
backpack is pretty much ready. I think it's almost time to start sanding everything. Will post a picture with everything assembled sometime in the following days.
The movement in the legs is great, the movement of the upper body is a bit restrictive though, but it's nothing I can't fix. I'll try to have it sanded and ready for paint by the end of next week. Thanks for the support! I'm especially fond of the hands you made for your marine. You have to make a video showing how they work!
I made a new mouth piece for the helmet. I personally think this one looks a lot cooler, but the downside is that I can no longer see through the mouth. Might have to rethink it later, but for now it will do.
Just for the record, I tested my suit outdoors for the first time the other day and accidentally scared the crap out of some kid. I take that as a sign that I'm doing something right. I also got a lot of positive attention from people in the surrounding buildings! This is the kind of stuff that makes me want to keep going and finish this thing.
Quick question... I would like to drybrush my armor with metallic silver paint, but I can only find metallics in spray cans. I've painted tons of miniatures in my day, so I know there are metallic paints that you can drybrush on. What kind of paint should I be looking for? I don't really feel like buying 200 pots of paint from Games Workshop for 5 dollars each.
I like Ceramcoat's silver quite a bit, and it should be cheap. It's acrylic though, so I would test it first. I don't work with foam so I can't say if it will stick well or not.
I'm sure Rub 'n Buff will also be suggested, but I've never been any more impressed with it than simply dry-brushing metallics.
Here's what the shoulder pad looks like with a coat of PVA glue and primer on it. To me it doesn't seem too bad. I still need to caulk some areas again because the seams are a bit too obvious. I think I'm on the right track at least.
Still going at it. I added biceps to the arms and gave up functional hands in favor of accurate proportions. Still caulking stuff as you can see, but it's moving forward at least! Also, I really need to install some fans in the suit.... It's hot as hell in there!
I'm still alive! I've finished caulking the entire armor! Now I'm going to coat the whole thing in PVA, then I can finally start painting... ***** ******, how many times have I said that? Anyway, I made a loincloth!
My only advice to you is that you can never sand too much (unless you make a hole in the foam, in which case you may have gone a bit far). I often think to myself when I feel a bump over a seam "I can fix that with caulk!" but that's not how you should do it. Sand that bump until you can't feel it anymore, then caulk to seal the seam. I made the mistake of not sanding enough on my shoulders and I ended up having to tear off the caulk and redo the sanding.
I use latex caulk, but I've heard people get good results with paintable silicone caulk as well. I cannot imagine your seams being that obvious after looking at your pictures! Mine are way worse in comparison.
I'm not dead, nor am I slacking off! I've quietly been working hard to finish the armor in time for a convention next month. It's getting close! Just need to finish the paintjob and weathering, install some fans and add some really minor details to finish it off. Here's a sneak peek for now. You'll get a more complete picture before the end of next week. Right now I'm fighting off a nasty cold and I've completely lost my voice. So I'm not getting much done right now, but I expect to be able to work on it again within a few days.
