Voltron (Amazon) Starring Henry Cavill

I heard this was in the works but didn't know they started filming.

Well, on the one hand it has Henry Cavill. On the other hand, it's a beloved 80's franchise which means Amazon will make a low effort, nostalgia money grab of a movie.

Well, the little description paragraph talks about "reimagining the show for live-action". That's strike #1 against the project in my mind.

(It's giant robots on a foreign planet. That stuff does not get oudated every 20 years because it was never real. The reason why they are remaking it is because it still has fans. It still has them because it was imagined correctly the first time.)

On the other hand, the only producer mentioned has a track record on Voltron cartoons. That's probably a good sign.

It would be nice to see one live action film that actually has the look and feel of the original 80's cartoon it's based on. I hope they completely avoid any content from the newer cartoon, not because it's bad, but because it has a very different feel to it.

That kind of movie would be the most fun.

It would probably make the most money.

And they definitely won't do it.

I've watched a little bit of the two Voltron cartoons he worked on. I didn't like them at all.

The 2017 Power Rangers movie tried something similar... and made $142.5 USD million worldwide. On about a $100 million budget, they lost $$$.

Granted, this Voltron will be on Amazon Prime/Video instead, so we'll never know numbers. The original GoLion Japanese show was violent and had more mature/adult themes than the edited/re-arranged (Lion Force) Voltron we received in the United States in 1984, not to mention the Dairugger XV totally unrelated series, that later became Vehicle Voltron in the United States.

Still, I'll keep hoping until I see the final project. I am a (peripheral) fan.

Fair enough. But the 2017 PR movie didn't have great reviews and the production design didn't look like earlier toys.

I just don't buy Hollywood's attitude that these old designs need major changes by default. The Michael Bay transformers do not look better than the G1 originals. The Michael Bay CGI Ninja Turtles are not improvements over the 1990 Jim Henson costumes. Netflix's He-Man reboot actually kept the 1980s toy look and that was the best thing about it. Christopher Reeve is still the most iconic Superman and he's wearing bright-colored tights. The Michael Keaton batsuits are closer to ideal than anything we've seen since. The Ghostbusters 1980s ghost-busting hardware is fine. The studios need to learn to leave this stuff alone.

I agree... I would for them LOVE to have the original Lion design, and to NOT change the main characters.

I think a lot of people liked the recent Voltron cartoon. I watched an episode or two up to the point where they get the lions. However, I think the feel from the old show was missing. The old Voltron, both of them, had the cool Japanese animation.

I can't imagine that this movie will capture what was so cool about the vintage Voltron cartoon. To do Lion Voltron right, it should be an epic space movie, Which I have a feeling they aren't making.

Actually, I think it might be easier to make the vehicle Voltron even though I didn't like that design much. But I did like the idea of the teams and how the vehicles also could form the three different groups.

Have to agree. The new show was actually quite good IMO, but a different thing.

Totally agreed. This must be an epic space movie! I'm wondering how much creative control Cavill has. I have a lot of faith in the guy, because he's a nerd like us.

Then you just have Transformers all over again. No thank you.

How much comic / cartoon stuff does Henry Cavill really like though? I thought he could have been a good Superman but the movies let him down. I think he rides motorcycles at times. And I saw a clip of him building a computer. I haven't seen Witcher yet. I don't check his social media stuff unless I see it mentioned on an entertainment news site. So I haven't seen anything like a comic, anime, or game collection that says the guy really likes this stuff.

With Transformers, I've only seen the first two movies and I can only remember a few bits from the first one that I actually liked. I can't remember anything from the second movie except I think the crude joke with the Constructicons. But I don't remember any Transformer that is similar to the Vehicle Voltron. The first Transformers had these bits that I remember. Which probably isn't that great when I can only come up with 3 good things.

1. When Optimus showed up at the end and they rolled towards the city for the big fight. The through the building shot was cool but that's used in a few movies now.

2. The ending shot of Starscream leaving Earth during the credits. The music was kind of good I think.

3. And Megan Fox I think was around or was shot riding a motorcycle. I remember looking up the brand of boots she was wearing. They are kind of popular. I recall she showed her artwork on a Late Night talk show. Also I kept this Megan Fox image from around that time that's relevant to this topic.

Check out his Warhammer experiences. Hardcore gamer, and producing the Warhammer show for Amazon!
