Voldemort Build Thread (very pic heavy)

What would you say the prosthetic project has cost, if you don't mind sharing that kind of info?

Yeah, good question.

I just want to say, out of all the making of threads I have seen this is one of the best. The fact you showed your messups in such detail AND your repairs.

I read every word in your post and examined all of the pictures. (usually I kind of skim around if it isn's star wars related, I'll be honest)

And BTW, YOU ARE ARTISTIC! :lol I don't know how you could say that you aren't! Even the veins and little details really POP and give this guy life.

Oh and I'm not even a HP fan! Yet I was enthralled by this thread.

Just jaw dropping results. I bet some of those kids won't sleep right for a year after meeting you!!!

(y)thumbsup

2 thumbs WAY up on this one!

Really makes me want to start sculpting again. What I don't know! But something! I have wanted to make my own prosthetics as far back as I have memory of being alive. I used to watch the making of THRILLER and was in AWE of just this kind of thing as a kid/teen.

not sure what this cost keiron but as in my experience usually between 4 and 600 pounds . once the mould is made then copies cqn be done in silicone for a lot less. when we do a custom job including lifecast etc its never less than a thousand. its a lot of work to get one of these done plus we do custom teeth too. lifecast, positive custom sculpt, fibreglass mould, silicone injection finishing seaming, painting and teeth a grand is pretty cheap realy. Keiron cut a lot of that out by doing it himself but still materials for this job cost a hell of a lot. and yeah he is Artistic, might not have realised it but he is. also he did the right thing in asking those in the know lots and lots of questions and followed the advice given. this has been a long journey for Kieron to get to this and to say i'm proud just aint enough. i got a good mate out of this project too. big up Kessa !!!!

Love this!! As a Harry Potter fan I am floored by the time and detail you put into it. I love detail and would love to attempt things like this but I can get so overwhelmed by everything involved (and cost) that I usually won't go forth with something. I don't know if you ever just looked at what you were doing and thought "forget this" but I know I probably would have lol! Thanks so much for sharing and it's great to have a thread like this available now to anyone else who is thinking about attempting something like this.

Aww, thanks for all the lovely posts - it's lovely to see so many people enjoying it and taking an interest. This whole project has always been about creating something that everyone can enjoy, so it really means a lot - thanks :)

@piehead
Ah Ian my friend. You know better than most the in's and out's of this journey and it's been an absolute pleasure to have you there helping me along throughout.

just watched the deathly hallows mate... (not my fave potter movie it has to be said), you seen voldy's hands ?
You're ahead of me there then mate - I still haven't seen it yet.

Ironically, I probably won't get to see it until it's out on DVD due to us having the kids and I think we've used up our babysitting allowance for the immediate future. :(

I really hope they release it on DVD before the next one comes out or I'll be really scuppered! lol (Wonder if WB fancy giving us a private showing? lol)

ya know this has me thinking, maybe i could pull of a mad eye moody complete with animatronic eye piece... i kinda have the build of brendon gleeson and contacts who worked on the make up for advice ....yeah thats me a porky dude.
That would be awesome! I know of somewhere that makes some pretty cool Madeye coats so I could point you in their direction if you're interested

@Westies14
What would you say the prosthetic project has cost, if you don't mind sharing that kind of info?

No, I dont mind sharing at all.
At the moment, I haven't totaled it up so I dont honestly know the final figure. I'm not "minted" by any means, and my original budget was increadibly tight at about £600 all in....

..... oh, what a naive fool I was lol

Seriously though, When I did my preliminary research I'd got quotes for many of the materials from a company in the USA. I checked in advance if they'd ship to the UK and they said they would - long story short, when it came to it, they said they couldn't - by that time I'd already spent a load on supplies over here and the costs of the remaining bits effectively doubled.

Had they have been honest from the beginning, I'd have known the costs would have been significantly higher so I'd have never started the project. Hey ho.

Anyway, you can double that figure easily.... I still haven't plucked up the courage to work out the exact figure, but it's easily in excess of £1,200 - £1,400.

I'd say about £600 - £800 of that is prosthetics stuff.
However, as with everything, you learn by your mistakes - my 1st lifecast was £150 - I wouldn't use bodydouble again, so that's a big saving right away.

Similarly, I over ordered about another £60 worth of chemicals.
I also probably used more quantities than I needed to of Gelcoat, etc so probably could save another £50 or so just through more experience.

Piehead's estimate of £400 - £600 sounds good to me if I retrospectively applying what I've learnt so far so if you keep that in mind as a rough ballpark you shouldn't be far off (depending what you're planning to make obviously ;) ).

@TheLMAN
I wish I could make something like that !
Seriously, that's exactly what I'd have thought if I'd have seen this a couple of years ago. I was completely new to all this and you have to learn somewhere, so never feel you can't do it - if I can, anyone can! (seriously! lol)

@Eveningarwen
I don't know if you ever just looked at what you were doing and thought "forget this" but I know I probably would have lol

Ah, there were many a time like that! lol
Especially when things were going wrong. Unfortunately it was one of those things where so much had already been spent it would have been a complete waste to just stop, so I didn't really have much of an option other than to stick with it. I try not to think about the costs as I tend to go as pale as voldy lol

this costume...everything about it, is a worth of beauty. You have artistic talent, trust me on that!

Cant wait to see it in the flesh too.

yeah Kieron point me in the direction of the mad eye coat. i'm kinda thinking i could do it justice. and one of my all time fave characters, goblet of fire and order of the poenix being mu faves. plus i can call on nick , shaun and mark for advice plus chris clarke who did the animatronic eye... good to have mates in the game. i have animatronics experience and prosthetics so should be able to pull that one off i reckon. maybe even a metal foot too. sure i could sculp and cast that . then its just he wand and staff plus need to source the clot for his trousers. and have to say mate its been my pleasure to advise, sure mav would say the same. we are are always there for you dude. just brilliant to finally see it all work. as i said i'm realy proud of ya and to those that dont know. this hasnt been an over night thing Kiron has spent many months getting this right. asking questions in the fx community and working on that advise , making changes then asking again. i remember when you started out dude. you have come so far and for a first job... amazing. me and daz do this stuff a lot and its easy to get complaicent about whats involved . those dvd's of neills are meant for those with plenty experience but you did it, first time out. met the problems head on and sorted them out and got a brilliant mask. WELL DONE BRO !!!!

Mine is made from silicone, but I think WB would probably want to have a few words with me if I ever drempt of selling them!
(so just for the record - I did this one for my own personal use (legal bit over! ;) :lol))

Unfortunately the best you can buy at the moment is this latex monstrosity!

In fairness, I did see a pic of someone at the recent Premiere wearing it, and it didn't look all that bad (considering it's about £30 as opposed to over £500+), but the pose you see in the pic is the pose you're stuck with as there's no facial movement at all so it's really only any good for a fun evening in fancy dress, etc.

Well i'm thinking you did a really great job, and put in a lot of hard work, and the results speak for themselves, well done.

I bust out laughing every time you said you're not an artsy person. I consider myself to BE an artsy person and I could NEVER in a million years come close to achieving something as amazing as this. You really are too modest!!

You have an incredible range of talent that has been applied impeccably to create this replica. I hope to see more of your work in the future! I'm sure you made many, many fans' days by creating and bringing something that realistic and fantastic out to the local area. Congrats on a job incredibly well done!!

Can I slap you?
You are VERY artistic!

In fact, I have a request.

Any chance you could make a dedicated topic to making a head cast like you did. Yours is so detailed already and I've been thinking of making a head cast so I can possibly tackle some things myself.

Congrats on the PERFECT looking voldemort and keep up with the amazing prosthetics. Although, there is one picture I don't like. The one scaring the kid. It looks perfect, until Harry was there :p Sorry!
