Various 3D printed and finished props

Hello hello. I haven't posted before. Sorry about that. I guess there's a first time for everything.

About 18 months ago, I got a 3D printer. Nothing fancy, in fact, a very cheap option available from a supermarket.

Since then, I've been going a bit nuts printing props and finishing/weathering/painting/tinkering with them.



On the left:

• Raiders Of The Lost Ark fertility idol
• DL-44 blaster
• Headpiece to the Staff of Ra
• Miniature Ark of the Covenant
• Miniature grail tablet
• Miniature Sankara stones
• Terminator T-800 CPU chip
• Anakin/Luke saber hilt
• Obi-Wan Kenobi saber hilt
• Star Trek phaser
• Star Trek VI assault phaser
• Miniature holy grail

On the right:

• Loki's Mask, aka the mask from The Mask (80% scale)
• Star Trek TNG phaser type-2
• Miniature horgah'n idol from Star Trek TNG
• Everlasting gobstopper from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

3D printers are fun.

Really impressive. For a cheap printer you've done great job. What techniques did you use to refine the finish/take out the grain? I see it's more evident on some pieces

Are you saying all those pieces are 3D printed?

Everything look really nice. Did you design most of it or are they from thingiverse ?

Very nice pieces. I like the Indiana Jones prints.
To save time I use XTC-3D. Good stuff to smooth 3d prints.

The tl;dr version is basically lots and lots of filler primer/spray putty and sanding. Lots and lots.

Most at of them are from thingiverse, some with some modifications. The exceptions are:
- Raiders Idol. Sculpted of myself in Sculptris.
- Grail tablet - created it myself using reference photos and some programs that convert greyscale image data to "terrain", which worked great for the surface of the tablet.
- The Mask was also created in Sculptris.
- Gobstopper was modeled in a 3D program that has no business being used for 3D print design, but it got the job done. That thing is a SURPRISINGLY complex shape.
- Sankara stones were made in Sculptris - all three are slightly different.
- Luke/Anakin saber is from GrabCAD, not thingiverse. Great model, too.

Im going to look into XTC-3D now, looks like it's great stuff!
