Varia suit

Ok so when i started this build i knew it was going to be heavy, unfortunately i did not expect it to be this heavy.
so i was hoping to pull from the community to see if anyone else has had trouble with extremely heavy costumes and how did you solve the weight issues. I'm thinking of some sort of spinal support that will transfer the weight from my shoulders to my hips. Any tips are appreciated

Never ceases to amaze me what people can do from the pep files :) Great work!

I've seen people with suits such as the Iron Man suits build straps in to transfer the weight. Check out this link, it might help!

^^ This. Making a harness to distribute the weight around your body goes a LONG way. If it still seems too heavy, then you might want to look into moulding/casting the heavier parts in urethane to eliminate a LOT of the weight. How thick did you lay up the fiberglass on the inside? The resin is what adds the majority of the weight.

Edit: Just looked through your pics again and saw that you rondoed the insides. THAT'S where all the weight is coming from.

Ya this was my first time using pepakura resin and bondo to make a costume. I was just following others ways of doing it, and I have a habit of overdoing things, and I wanted the suit to be strong. So ya its a bit thicker than it needs to be I guess, but I'm running out of time for when id like to have this done by so I don't really have the choice of starting over or casting it out of a lighter material. guess I'll just have to build a support spine that can take the weight.

Well now you know. I always laugh when people whine about their armor being heavy but swear by rondoing EVERYTHING.

Good luck with your harness and support.

If you ordered the materials now you should be able to get the build casted.
(I have a con in July and I have not even stared my costumes yet ^_^; )

Another advantage to casting would be the durability. If you fell, or dropped something the chances of it smashing is decreased.
The last thing I used body filler on smashed; It was sad...

I've never cast anything before, I'm a quick learner so I might have to look into it.
What do you use to make the final cast from?

Usually a urethane rubber/plastic. It's pretty damage resistant. Look into Smooth On's line of stuff. You can do some really neat things.

I don't use premixed fillers but instead use thinner matting to begin (I even will build with glass tissue) and use a microballon filler to make a chemically identical filler. It's also not as brittle and because it bonds chemically it won't chip off either. But I also build with a foam core board as it makes for a really nice support to glass over the inside and outside. And I came about this method only after getting sick of how heavy and warped my projects were using a more standard card and resin method.
And with the foam core board you wind up with resin slumping in to the joins so they wind up being very solid!

My Black Widow rifle is 50" and weighs very very little- it's awkwardly sized for hands so it does still look heavy!)

And epoxy resin really is incredibly light and durable to begin with :) I dropped the helmet in my user avatar on glass tiles. The rangefinder snapped (it's now made of laminated PVC so much less likely) but the helmet itself bounced a couple of times. Ditto with my Slave Leia bikini :) It's glassed also.

I currently look as though I have a breakout of spots thanks to getting some on my face though (must have got some through the gloves and I transfered it to my face during clean up). So it's not all rainbows and unicorns.

However, go you! Samus is a build I have wanted to do for years but with said allergy and also lack of space it's back on my list of "don't get your hopes up" wish lists :) That said....

Nice, that's actually how I learned to do pepakura and bondo was from someone doing a YouTube video on halo armor making.
