Vader saber conversion questions

I picked up an mpp replica in a trade. I've decided to go ESB with this one, but I've got a couple questions for anyone who has done this.

First, does anyone know how to do the ESB style grips so that they stay level even over the raised portion of the bottom of the flash unit? I had been thinking of sanding them down, but I've never really worked with the grip material before.

Second, what's the best way to get that damn plaque off? Dremel grinder?

well i left the grips on mine so that they sat a little uneven, at first i cut them to fit flush but didn't like the way it looked up close so i bought new grips and just put them on. a sharp razor will cut the grips fine. the plaque i used a dermal with a sanding drum, taped the area off and just sanded the rivet heads off. hope that helps

The grips should be made out of black plastic t-track to be accurate.
Let me know if you are in need of some.

Also, the grips on the original Vader saber were not notched out, they just overlapped the endcap.

Nice website! Especially your correct attribution of the ROTJ hero saber as the MPP, not the 'barbican' version.

This is something that Lonepigeon and myself had discovered a few years back.
In fact it was he who also believed (and I agree) that this same hero ESB/ROTJ saber was also the version 2 ANH saber (which can be seen during Leia's interrogation scene). Which means that this particular saber would have been used by Vader in all three films. Pretty neat.
