Not sure how accurate this stuff is but I was at my local art store this week and they have rolls of aluminum wireform mesh for sculptors .... they had two different size openings ( 1/8th inch and 1/4 inch) and it looks exactly like what is used in my RotJ vader helmet. All you need to do is paint it.
Some art stores sell a 16" x 20" 'sheet' for less than $8.00. (so if you have an Artist's and Craftsmen Supply chain in your town check into it)

I found a few places to order it from but you'd have to verify what size opening they have available... Jerry's Artarama sells Diamond Mesh - 20" wide × 10 foot roll with 1/4” openings for $18.75 and Sparkle Mesh - 20" wide × 10 foot roll with 1/8” openings for $21.63... other sizes available there too.
