Interest Unused Concept Voyager Tricorder - SECOND RUN INTEREST

Hi all, just a little update on whats happening....
Im moving to the rental house this weekend.
Right now I have no idea if ill be able to use any of my equipment... So right now I dont know if I can do the tricorders yet...

I hope I can... But if I do it wont be till the new year. I have a full time job now, and while its currently remote work, they want me to visit the office next month (for a month) That would take me to december... I also need to finalise the new electronics work...

Also with the new electronics work, I also need to make changes to the software, as loading the graphics will be done differently now.

So there is actually going to be some more dev time needed on the software as well...

Also very likely next year ill be moving again into a new owned home... So ideally ill look at making the tricorders before then if I can. But I cant guarantee it...

So for the moment I need to play things by ear.

Keep posting here and pester me, I will get around to it :) As I WANT to make it.
Thank you for the update. I am 100% on board with your next batch. I hope things are going better, and that you're in your new home soon!

I’m definitely still on board when you get back up and running again. Best of luck :) Hope things get better for you in the new year.

MangyDog Hang in there -- reinforcing my interest for one of your Tricorder Masterpieces!
All will work out. Wishing you Amazing - and will keep you in thoughts and prayers. Ed

MangyDog How are you doing? Hope things are looking up for 2025 - and it will be an Amazing Year Ahead for you and all of us!
Best Wishes,

Thanks Ed and everyone for your interest.

Right now it looks like I have more than enough interest to do another run. But I'm stuck. This past holiday period I was building a bench/table for a cnc machine I plan to build. And the truth is I just dont have enough space in this rental.

I also dont know when I'm going to be able to buy a place. Which Im now doubting will be this year.

I really want to do the next run, and if Im to be frank. I can REALLY do with the money it would bring in. (to go towards home)

I really am going to continue to figure out how I will do this, but it might mean having to wait to at least spring when its warmer before I can start anything.

In the mean time. I am just wrapping up this Borg video, and I will start looking at the electronics again for the new tricorder version.

I know many are waiting patiently wont be happy to hear of more delays. I'm just really stuck with trying to figure out how to do this in a place that's frankly too small for me.

MangyDog Glad to hear things are going ok for you. Of course, understand the logistics. Thanks for sharing an update.
We're all Excited for the Spring -- and for your work to commence.
Wishing you a 2025 filled with Abundance!
Ed

Oh please dont get the wrong idea, its not a guarantee ill be working on this in spring.... Its more a, Im going to see what I can do. And hopefully with the warmer weather I can spread out some stuff I have into storage to make space.
I want to make this work but I cant say it will.

Yes - Gotcha - just spreading some Good Vibes out there for you -- and being hopeful!
Best Wishes

I've been watching your borg cube videos, well done!
I'm still 100% in on a next run when ever it happens. Please consider private messaging those that have expressed interest when you are comfortable with your life and workspace situation.

I am _very_ interested!

Hi all,
You may have seen my thread on the build of the V2 concept tricorder.

I also recently released 3 videos covering its build and development
and

Over the last couple of months I have been working to make a small run of builds. I have done some more designs to make the electronics and chassis more robust and also easier to build.

I have several buyers already, but a few have dropped out so I have 3 slots immediately available with a potential to push for another 4 on top of that.

I would at least really like to fill up these last 2 or 3 slots, as all my immediate costs were calculated for that initial run amount. Anything above that would be a bonus.

Time frame. I have told people my plan is to have the builds all completed by September. But to expect winter at the latest. But I do hope to have them completed sooner.

There are a few major changes to the design.
One change is to the exterior chassis. The buttons will no longer be recessed but instead would have more traditional flat decals.
This is done to make the vinyl decals more robust, as previously the decals ended up being 1 or 2 mm thin when they framed some of the recessed buttons, and I am worried about them delaminating. The change to make the buttons flat and as part of a larger decal will correct this.

The second major change is the power system inside the tricorder. I have reworked the electronics to predominantly work on 3V. This would help save power and reduce waste on having to use LDO to give the majority of 3V. In all this should mean a longer battery life.

Also the charger circuit has also been changed. Again this should provide a faster yet safe charging system than the previous version.

Along with the new power system is a new way to turn on the tricorder.
It would be more like a smart phone, the PWR button on the front of the tricorder will be used to start up the device and there will be a software shutdown control to power it off. This means you will only need to open the back access panel to charge the tricorder and or to change it to display mode and to turn on or off the sound effects.

The battery will also be more easy to replace when the LIPO cell fades.

As for price.
I am asking for £1600 total(+ Postage and Packing, roughly £20 for Royal Mail to US) . This will be split into 2 payments.

Firstly I would ask for a deposit £100. This deposit is non-refundable as it would be used to pay for materials. This is also a commitment to pay for the Tricorder once the build is complete.

You will then make a second payment of £1500 on completion to receive your Tricorder.

Please be aware. On completion, you will have a 6 month window to make the final payment. After 6 months I will reserve the right to sell your build to another person, and you will loose your prop and deposit.
This is done to stop any endless delays, and I hope you agree that 6 months is a fair window. But I recommend you either have most if not all the funds available when you make your deposit so not to fall fowl of this.

I am offering two payment options.
This final price is calculated with PayPal in mind. So if you wish to use PayPal you can.

But I prefer payments to be made via wise.com .
I have a promotional link that not only offers me a small kick back when people sign up through it, it also has vastly better exchange rates and smaller fees. And they also offer 500GBP fee free transfer. Contact me for the link if you want to pay via this.

One final note. I am in the UK and all my prices are in GREAT BRITISH POUNDS and NOT USD. This is why wise.com I feel is the better choice.
You will be responsible for any import fees that may happen.

I hope these final terms are reasonable and fair.

Contact me if you wish to buy one :)

Thank you

I am also very interested whenever you are able to do this project again, though I am not sure if I will be able to afford it this year due to finances currently being a little tight. Still I look forward to hearing more updates about any potential projects and wish you all the best.

Regards,
Gaius

Hi All, I felt I should give an update on what's happening.....
I'm afraid to say not amazing news.
I've tried to see if I could juggle things around here... Its simply not easy and near undoable. I'm also building a bench top CNC machine for multiple other projects. But that's squeezed out all the space I had here. (this has actually been something I've been wanting to build for years and even been buying parts for as far back as 4 years ago.
So I'm sorry to say while I'm renting in this place, I wont be able to build the second run. The main reasons. I don't have the space needed to resin print the chassis and clean them up here. And my laser cutter is decommissioned while I'm here So I cant laser cut the bits I need there too.

Now.... Some hope on the horizon. It is and has always been my plan to buy a new home ASAP... Trouble is currently with work they have kind of messed up those plans in the mean time. Not only not giving me the raise they basically promised. But also putting pressure on me to move to the other end of the country. Which I'm not prepared to do.

I had hoped I would have been putting in offers if not moved into a new place I own by now originally...

I have another pay review coming soon. So I will see if I can get the wage I need to start actively putting in offers on a new place. I have a healthy deposit from when I lost my home. But I still need make sure I can have enough to cover the mortgage to get the kind of place I want and need.

All in all I think its very much more likely now that I will be making the second run next year.

So yeah, I'm sorry for not being able to give better news. I just wanted to be honest with everyone about it.

I do want people to know though I DO want to make this happen. There's a good number of people here that want the prop and I really would like to be able to make people happy.

And on a selfish note, the money I can raise with this run would really help me a lot with getting a reasonable chunk of my mortgage removed for the new house. (it might knock a few years off the 25 year mortgage plan...

But anyway. I really wanted to be honest at where we're at.

On a positive note though.

As mentioned previously I have actually been reworking the electronics a bit. And this will give a few improvements.

Firstly the move from the STM32 to a ESP32 S3 as the main processor.

The main reason for this was to slightly simplify some of the design. With the ESP and as a dual core processor with expandable program space and ram. I can now put all the audio handling into the ESP32. As well as have all the graphics assets in program space.

The upshot here is I don't need to rely on supply of a dodgy Chinese mp3 player chips with virus laden datasheets to run the sound.

And with the assets in the program space, and the EVE chip now on a quad SPI data connection, asset loading would be a lot faster.

This might help reduce some of the power draw, but its more likely that while theres extra components, the extra performance of the esp32 will equal all that out.
Its also possible I might be able to underclock the ESP32 to reduce power, but that would need experimenting for...

Also while I still need to test this and see just how robust this will be... I can return to using traditional brass hinges as I have been researching on data over power ICs. Theres a risk of dataloss through the hinge as the off the shelf ones might be a little more loose and not have perfect contact. But that might be something I can mitigate and work around.

And finally a more recent development. Flexible PCBs have got much cheaper lately thanks to JLCPCB... So there might be some more changes to the PCB to take advantage of that.

One last thing on the price of the new tricorder. I will be keeping the price of £2000 GBP as previously stated... But for those in the US and me being in the UK. I suspect there would have to be the added tariffs on top for you.

The tariff situation is ever evolving and I have no idea if it even applies currently for props and collectables. But when the time comes, US based buyers would need to be prepared to take on the extra costs that might add at the time.

(For the sake of not falling fowl of the No Politics rule. Please do not discuss the merit of them or the wider political element of them. Simply that for now they exist and we need to navigate them)

Anyway that's pretty much everything I can update on at the moment... I really do mean it I want to get these out there for people.

Keep an eye out here for any other updates in the future...

All the best

Mangy
