Unique Lightsaber Display Idea--Thoughts?

I was brainstorming novel ways to display my sabers, and I thought of this: What if you had a glass topped coffee table with a full shelf about eight inches down? You could blue velvet line it and make real nice wooden or acrylic cradles/stands.

Of course, the whole thing would have to be heavy to avoid massive bumps, and totally sealed against spills.

Anyone else have props/models at "groud level?" Am I an idiot who's risking the destruction of thousands of dollars worth of sabers? I think it would look REALLY snazzy myself.

It would make a very unique coffee table - a good way to blend a collection in to a room without it jumping out at you, I guess.

The only thing that's getting me is that many sabers are more "photogenic" from the side, so viewing the "top side" might not look great. Maybe "bottom side" up for some? I'll have to lay it out first.

But then I have the conundrum of the Dooku saber. Not that I have one...but it's on my short list.

:)

LZeitgeist has a coffee table similar to what you're describing. I don't think it was 8" deep but it did have sufficient room to display a fair amount of Rocketeer items.

I have that kind of coffee table in my living room. It has glass top, and a drawer beneath. The drawer used to be filled with paper, remote controls and other junk, so I thought that inorder to keep it neat, it should contain something that would not invite other things. Therefore, I bought 1" thick foam for padding, and a deep red satin cloth to cover it. I placed my Boba Fett Blaster, Judge Dredd Lawgiver, Two Finnish made knives and two 16th century pistols in it. The props do not strike out, but look really good in it. And on the plus side, the table keeps itself clean, as I want to be able to see the props myself.. My LIGHTsaber still stands on top of the television.. (It contains functioning c-cell maglite in the hilt, therefore LIGHTsaber. Just imagine how I like blackouts...)

Yup, it's commonly known in furniture stores as a 'Map Table', because it generally comes displayed in the showrooms with a map of the world in it...

The display area is about 3-1/2" deep.

Perfect. I bet 3 1/2 is fine (8" is prolly too deep). I'd have to check it out. Map table. Awesome. I wonder if they come in various sizes? I'd likely get a rectangular one since I'll have 10-12 sabers to display. Time to go furniture hunting.

Well, mine is rectangular, about 3 feet by two feet. The drawer beneath the glass top is about 4" deep. Its the same deep brown color as the picture above. It cost somewhere around 80 euros, ie; about 100$. I'll try to get a pic today. (I work on a night shift, and got just home. The sun has not risen yet, and my living room is too dark to get any pictures.)

That's a nice one (though how do you bear the clutter?. I'm SO anal retentive...). I think this is definitely how I'll go. I like the finish. Is it some kind of national brand (like Ikea or Pottery Barn or something)?

I think most any furniture store should have something like that, unless you are interested in that specific make/model. I have one thats about 2x2x2. Below the top display are two shelves, plenty of room for more sabers or whathaveyou.

Wow -- cluttered is right. Is that Enterprise missing a nacelle?

Back to the original thread -- you may want to think about lighting as well. It is an enclosed space, so you wouldn't want anything too hot. Maybe some LED strips off to the sides.

Good call on the lights.

Oh and alienscollection, is that black car Kitt or Mad Max? I can't really make it out.

I had it made at Venice Wood & Iron in Vencie, CA - it was ultra cheap...

Yup, the Enterprise nacelle is laying next to it (I wanted it to look like it crashed into a sea of pop culture fanboy junk).

And yup, the black car is the 1:18 die case KITT

I call it the "I Had That." table...

Here's mine, with a few MR pieces inside - I was (obviously) going for the cluttered look.

So that's where my childhood went :eek

i actually RAN OUT of room to put swords and stuff a while back, so i had to MAKE myself a table...
its all made oout of hardwood and many many layers of black gloss paint applied.....
it holds my highlander sword and shield....

ive alctually since added a few other swords in it, but this gives you an idea of the table looking down at it.
