"Ulysses" sub display model - Disney's Atlantis

Hi gang, does anyone have any shots of the "builder's model" of this sub, from the attraction they had to publicise the film?

I had one somewhere, and have lost it. Was from a website article on the display, IIRC the pic quality wasn't that great.

The model was a real-life version of what you see in this scene. Looked like it might have been a pretty nice piece of work. If anyone visited the display and has more pics, could you please post a few? TIA!

These are all I have ever found.

It's a stunner. DaveG's Nautilus build reminded me how much I love this thing. Shame it gets crushed only fifteen minutes into the movie! Don't care, it's staying on my 'to build' list. :)

The two-disc DVD has a nice set of blueprints, and there's even a flyaround of the CG model they used in the film. Nice!

Your very welcome.

It's a really nice design.
I spent over a week looking for images but didn't find much.

Some of the artifacts and Shepherds Journal would be nice to have.

At Rite Aid (drug store) they have a light up key chain (blue LED) that looks like the crystals the Atlanians wore, I'm sure plenty of other stores have them as well, probably auto parts shops.
The crystal just needs to be frosted and the holder needs to be painted gold since it's silver and a leather cord attached.

That's totally cool.
I love the movie and was addicted to it for quite a while.

I'd like to eventually make Kida's mask and the journal.

Agree totally - I also spent days trying to find more and still do from time to time. There is also a Ulysses toy which looks reasonably accurate, but it's not all that big and I'm not sure there's much point in acquiring one. The ref on the DVD really is pretty good (high-res shots of that model would still obviously be a grail tho!)

A Shepherd's Journal would be very nice. The animator's character reference maquettes were beautiful pieces too - I really wanted the Milo and Kida ones bad. Damn shame they didn't put them out as merch. Here they are:

- the grumpy comms lady is great, too. :)

REL, that's excellent stuff. And yeah, I was blown away too when I found they'd built a model. I think actually that this IS my favourite sub, and probably my fave steampunk vehicle, period.

That model is a nice piece, too - the new pics courtesy of division 6 show a lot more detail than the one I had, they didn't skimp on it. I never knew the case and stand were so nice!

Eh, just followed more linkage on that digitalmediafx.com site and found the page where, I think, I originally got the pic I'd lost, it was the second one you posted, division 6.

According to that, the model was built by Greg Aronowitz and was used to build the CG model, presumably 3d-scanned. Designed by Matt Codd and Jim Martin.

Anyone here know any of these gents? :)

Ain't it, though? If nobody else tackles it first I'll be doing a project after I wrap up my Cygnus. 5' long sounds all right to me! There's enough on the DVD to make for an accurate build.

As a kit you mean, or as a one-off? One-off's straightforward enough, kitting it not so much. Mebbe fibreglass with CNC cut acrylic bulkheads...

Hey, the bridge sphere on the Disney model was probably a couple of Plastruct hemispheres, right? Pity we don't know the exact size. Doesn't really matter, I'd just like to go to the same scale.

Think I am getting a handle on this thing now...anyone out there who can CNC a big block of foam from a CG model?

Looky what I just found.
The original maker of the model.
Pic near bottom of page.

Might want to try contacting them for more info.

there are little environments inside all the tiny windows, and detailed, lit up hatches underneath. You can still see this model in a plexi case if you wander around the Disney animation building.

That is so awesome, Division 6! Hi, Martyn, we don't all want to bug the maker but will you be our spokesperson? You communicate well and you know all the right questions to ask. Pleeease? :)

Thank you CJ, but like I say...done!!! I left a question or two on the blog, it just hasn't been moderated yet.

Thanks again D6. I did try to find Greg last time around but my Google-fu failed me. Well done! Here's hoping he would like to talk Ulysses.

Gawd, he built Kosh too. I didn't notice on my first scan of the blog. I have half a Kosh suit in my shed; the helmet was accidentally destroyed. Always wanted to resculpt it, never got around to it. Wish I'd kept the mould in the first place!
