U-571 Enigma.

Gone but not forgotten.
Anyone here ever replicate or maybe even have an Enigma machine like the one in U-571? I don't know the differences between the real ones (there were many types) and the typewriter one used in the film.

I'm wondering how hard it would be to replicate it. Any good pics would be appreciated.

I think there maybe a project going somewhere to build replicas of these. I read up on them about a year ago when I saw the movie on video. One of the sites I went to was talking about someone who was making parts or something. Sorry, I know that's just amazingly helpful. ;)

How accurate a replica do you want?

Edit--yeah, have you tried:

This may not be all that accurate, but cool anyway:

WOW! That site is amazing! But the cost of one of those suckers is 50g -- little too much for my collector case.

I was just looking for a static replica that could be hollow for all I care. I love the design of the machines and one would look great next to my WW2 Sub stuff I have.

The Enigma has intrigued me well before the film. It was also the inspiration for the "Lectre" machine used in "From Russia With Love". I recall a thread here recently which showcased an amazing collection and the owner had an Enigma. Don't know if it was real or replica but it was nice. Easily the coolest thing that stood out in his collection over the amazing library full of historical items and original film props. The Museum of Science and Industry here in Chicago has an Enigma in their U-505 exhibit. One of the coolest items in the museum to me, next to the sub, of course.

I would love to see this collection! Do you remember the link?

If you didn't want to take apart an old typewriter, I've seen typewriter key magnets at Barnes and Noble.
I believe they have similar things in the scrapbooking section of Micheals too.

if you have a few grand to spend they come up on the auction block from time to time..
