Back in my younger days I made a chainmail shirt (called a "hauberk") as part of a set of armor and weapons for a 10th century Varangian Viking costume. (There's a photo of it in my "prop room" thread in the General Pred Discussion section).

It took 9 rolls of galvanized wire, seven months, and well over 20,000 links.

Your fingers will get quite a workout.

I ended up making my own rings. The way I did it was to take a 3/8 inch round metal bar, drill a small hole through near one end, then get lots of galvanized wire (22 gauge, IIRC). Place the end of the wire through the hole, then wind it tightly around the metal bar, like a spring, until you run out of room, then cut off the wire, slide the wire coil off, and use wirecutters to clip each ring off along the top.

You can experiment with different thickness of wire and different diameters of metal bar, to get the size rings you like.

Lots cheaper than buying rings, but also lots more work.
