Tron User Costume

Hello all, I have been following these many tron costuming threads very much so and I am finally beginning my own.

I am currently doing some designing because it is going to be my own design, but a mix of C.L.U. and a user suit. I am actually going to over time be making two different user suits and one siren (for the girlfriend).

I have my upper body design basically ready, just trying to make sure it is what I want and it will look good at the same time before I begin the sculpting process.

Within the next week, me and the other person getting the user suits are going to do full upper body casts of ourselves and cast them so we will have nice structures to work on... and also so that the molding of the rubberized armor will be form fitting to our body structure and look great!

As for the molding we are just going for plaster bandages with vaseline as a release agent. Then casting the "bodies" out of fiberglass to begin sculpting with oil based clay, most likely sculpey.

After the sculpting phase we will use the tin moldMAX to begin making the mother mold for the casting of our armor, then covered with plaster bandages and fiberglass for support. after making the mother, and making sure it is all looking good, we will remove the clay from our casted fiberglass bodies and then put the mother back onto it and that is where we could use Dragonskin to begin the mold of the armor pieces. After popping out the fresh mold, it should fit perfectly snug to our body structure because of how it was cast on our "bodies".

Then comes the tricky part... Lighting.

As for lighting, I am looking at using EL Sheets for the chest lights, and possibly for a bit on the legs or arms. The rest I am using El Wire because I only want to have thin lights going down the legs. On the back I am planning on having the battery pack below the disk, and the inverter in the disk hub.

After the lighting we will wear the undersuit and glue down the rubberized armor, hiding all exposed wires and making it all one or two pieces. As for the hex pattern on the undersuit, I may not have that, I am either just using a spandex suit, or ifffffff Soulinertia finishes the pattern and begins selling it, I may have the undersuit pretty screen accurate!

I have been putting a lot of thought into this costume on how to make it turn out great, so I am going to start that soon!

Attached is a pic of my design for the suit so far.

thats an awesome looking drawing and your plans actualy helped out on my costume a little bit! for the undersuit if you dont want to pay for the fabric, heres what you could do. get on the computer and either make or print out a design for the hexagon pattern. after that, just cut out the hexagons and then use it like a stencil! thats what im planning on doing with the rinzler and it seems pretty simple and accurate looking!

Ahhh, well that is a good idea Rinzler! I may look into that! I know I am going to have to focus on the sculpting the most though, haha got a lot to do...

yes definatley deal with the armor first because its gonna be the hardest, and if you forget a few details... no ones gonna care at all if you do. i doubt any tron costume would be perfect no matter what. but anyway yes definatley start on the armor first.

Yup! prob gonna do cardboard cut outs soon just to start to get a feel for it to see how I like it before the initial sculpting.

Here is an updated pic of the suit with legs design

that looks pretty sweet man! i like it! so how do you necessarily sculpt it then mold it? because ive always just been told to make armor out of craft foam.

well, what I am doing is making a cast of my upper body, and then taking the clay and sculpting the armor pieces onto my body cast as if it was me, so it will sit flush, and curve at just the right places. then I will take the mold max and make an entire mold of my bodycast with the clay armor sculpt on it still. After I make this mold, I will then take the clay off of the body cast and then put the mold of the cast with the armor on it over the body cast again, so that I can now inject the dragon skin or whatever I use and then when I pop off the mold, I will have nice fitting armor :)

nice! not sure if im gonna try that for my rinzler suit or not though because it seems to be the perfect fit for me :lol so what color is the lighing gonna be?

I am going with a user suit, so I am going to have the white. I thought it could look pretty nice with the orange or yellow too, but the white could be fun

Excellent design. I too plan to go with a custom route but instead of armor I'm going to do a non armored program. Keep it up I look forward to seeing this completed.

haha very true, I just like how sleek they look. I have always been pulled toward white and black designs, to me they are the cleanest, and most prominent, thats my graphic design 2 cents worth haha

Thank you Panzer! I am hoping to break out the cardboard for some sizing and see how I like it more to scale!

ya black and white is also my favorite colors! im hoping to be a conceptual artist one day for disney buuuut i never color any of my drawings, their always black and white so we'll see how that turns out hahaha! anyway what are you gonna use as the disc?

If I may join this conversation, IMO green looks the coolest for lighting. I cant wait to see how this costume goes

Ahhh indeed you may enter haha Green does look pretty sick, I have always loved the Nvidia logo for its use of black and green together.

Ahh, well I am currently going for graphic design in college right now... so we will see how that goes haha and I live about 30 mins from disneyland in anaheim, and am going to electronica this saturday to get a closer look at some costume ideas!

As for the disk, I am most likely going to end up buying the deluxe disk and then mod it to better how I would like it ot be.

I wasted a rinzler disc to mod. I feel kinda bad now cause they sell for thirty bucks, and i could have made 100% profit on it. I guess ill pick some new ones up at target

ahhhhh that sucks :(

I am going for the white mod. I may even pick up a couple kits from soulinertia for that.

I also need a silver disk for a siren... :O

Two words:
spray paint. Soulnertia's kits seem rather overpriced to me. For lighting im getting some orange el wire to put in the inside of my disc for lights. Im probably also going to put reflective tape on the inside of the disc to make the lights seem even brighter.
Propmaster made c rings out of epoxy resin and it looked great.
