TNG Mk VII Medical Tricorder - anything out there?

I was just thinking an "evolution of the tricorders" thread would be really cool and informative. I started a quasi one in another forum talking about the latter seasons medical trics.

Basically, TNG seasons 1 to about 3 or 4 used the Mark VI. There were a few versions of graphics for the Mark IV. The latter Mark VI's had similar if not the same graphics as the Mark VII.

The main difference, and what is relevant here is the TOP of the tricorder. The Mark VI had a portion cut out of the top to house a small hand scanner. There was also an additional medical attachment that "fit" into this space.

Here is the top of a Mark VI:

And the medical attachment:

And a Mark VI next to the hand scanner:

As opposed to the top of a Mark VII which has no such scanner and no such space:

The Mark VII Science and Mark VII Medical were two seperate tricorders as opposed to the Mark VI and the medical attachment.

Don't forget there were 2 different body types for the MKVI. The first season MKVI made from resin which had the mechanical ratcheting opening mechanism. Slightly wider and flatter on top than the later MKVIs and MKVIIs. This is the one that had light gray graphics.

Starting in season 2 they switched to the clear vacuformed plastic MKVIs made by Miareki. These bodies were exactly like the MKVIIs except for the obvious scanner slot. Same graphics except for the screen and the TR-560 designation.

The removable medical scanner head pictured above on Myron's season 1 MKVI and by it self is actually the scanner head associated with the season 2 MKVI. The Season 1 scanner head had no indentations on the sides and didn't have that green scanner bar on the front. Only the little red LED to the side.

Good points Trip. We should work on that Tricorder evolution thread, it hasn't really been done before!

EDIT: I left these pics out not to confuse the issue, but I did mispeak by not mentioning the shapes differed and not just the grpahics. Here are some pics of the trics Trip is talking about:

I would have never known the difference if it wasn't for dorks like these, and I wouldn't be here if they weren't here also.

We should start a tricorder evolution thread. As far as I know the Tricorder went through at least 13 designs during the TNG era shows. I also seem to remember seeing a VI or VII painted red in the medical bay on one of the prop boards.

Dressing for the VOY sickbay, I think.

Yep. It appears in the background of a scene in the Voyager episode "Projections" (second season).

Some more info:

"A variety of the standard tricorder appeared in USS Voyager's sickbay in the year 2371. Five tricorders of this type were included in little alcoves behind the three biobeds and to the left and right of the main entry to sickbay. In 2372, these tricorders were replaced by PADDs. Similar tricorders where included in the same locations in sickbay aboard the USS Enterprise-E in 2373.

These tricorders were only seen in the first season of Star Trek: Voyager and in Star Trek: First Contact and were never seen in use. They were made out of wood and were removed from the set after the first season. Though they appeared in sickbay, they didn't feature the larger top section with the scanner normally associated with medical tricorders."

If you have the scratch, get Ed Miarecki to do one for you, you won't be sorry.

One of the red trics was auctioned on Ebay a few years ago. Some of the pictures I saw of it looked real enough.

Great pictures. I am going to start a tricorder evolution Thread tonight, but I don't have pictures of all of them so it will be up to you guys to fill in the blanks. :)

Cool... I have a few good ones, the obscure versions that maybe saw only one or two uses. I'll add 'em to the thread you start Myron.

I think By Far my favorite Style is the First season mark VI.
See here: MARK VI Sci.\Med. Replica Season 1 (Real Mechanical Ratchet) W/ Sci. & Med. Hand Scanner + Med. Head replica TV series prop from Star Trek: The Next Generation (TV) (1987)
I had this one made LONGG! ago by Federation Surplus from an original mold, to bad FS Does not exist any more.
it has no Sound and Runs on A J-Type but Is is my most Coveted Tricorder.
this is the only one I want to keep the way it is and not add sound or anything else.
It has that special mechanical Ratchet, now I just need to get around and buy a battery to show it off on You-tube.

I have been working on a Rod.com version for a very long time. I got a set of Makepeace electronics for it. One day I'll finish it. I got a blemish on the screen from the acrylic cement that I have to figure out how to get rid of without running the whole screen. If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated.
