TMNT - Display Donatello

Hey guys!

I recently found this site and loved seeing everyone's creativity when it came to movie replica props and displays. So much so that I have been inspired to take on a project of my own.

I have always been a fan of TMNT, and recently watched the first 2 movies again with my wife...which reinstated my longtime dream of having a turtle costume/display. So I started researching and came across this site!

Anyways, let's get to the project.

I was lucky enough to find a mannequin online for sale locally for $50! It didnt come with a stand so I had to build one. The supplies for the stand cost about $45. I'll probably rework it...but it works for now.

I got a styrofoam head from Hobby Lobby for $10.

The images above show the mannequin before anything was done to it.
I didnt have a good styrofoam head at the time..so i fashioned one and put the "V Mask" on it to get proportions.
This was also before the stand was built. It is leaning against a box behind the back that is against the wall.

The images above show the progress I've made so far.
I taped and glued all the joints together. Then I started carving foam for the muscle structure.
The mannequin is a little over 6ft....not accurate to the turtles (5ft 6in)...but for me it's close enough.
This height difference forced me to build up the muscle structure a little more to give a stockier appearance with the height.
The image on the right I tied a donut sled to the back to get an idea of the shell size. I'm not totally sure what I'm going to do for the shell (front and back) but this sled is looking like it could be useful.

While I was at it and in the TMNT mood, I though I would also start a Foot Solider mask. I guess I'm just too A.D.D. for one project!

I'll be working on the eyes next.

Comments and critics are welcome! Let me know what you guys think!

Cheers!

Making more progress. Got the arms bulked up. I'll probably have to take a bit off, but I'm waiting on the green spandex I ordered to come in.
Once that gets here I'll be stretching it over the body/muscles. It should smooth out the rough parts of the foam. When i get a good fit, I'll glue everything into place.

Anyway, here are a few more progress shots!

Feedback is appreciated!

Agreed.

The mannequin is a little over 6ft tall. The turtles (in the movies) are around 5' 6" from what I have found. I think once the muscles/foam are wrapped with the spandex it will give a better idea of the size. I agree the muscles need to be a bit smaller, but I'm going to wait until I get the spandex before I take too much off. Spandex gets here Thursday...and I have a 3 day weekend! Woohoo! :cool

Checked the tracking on the spandex shipment....it should be there when I get home!
Looking forward to testing this out.

So my spandex was in the mail when I got home. Spent the last 2hrs working on the left arm, neck, chest area.

I jumped the gun a bit and started spraying glue and stretching spandex....so I had some issues. Once I slowed down, I fixed them up....and they'll be almost completely unnoticeable after the paint job.

I think it is looking great! The roughness of the foam is smoothed out, the stretch of the spandex compressed the foam just a bit, there is good definition between the muscles. I'm excited to get the other arm done.

More progress pics soon!

Anyone have any advice for applying latex?

Can it be sprayed on?

My plan is to somehow apply latex over the spandex to seal everything up...then paint using an airbrush.

You're better off thinning it a little and applying it with a 2" brush.

I thought about that....but I dont want visible brush strokes. I was thinking about rolling it on with a 2" paint roller. Figured the "orange peel" effect might work for the skin texture.

I should have more progress images uploaded tonight.

Plan to wrap the other arm with spandex and start the foam on the thighs/legs.

In the process of packing and moving right now...so this build will be a little slow for a bit.

I know this is a really old post... but I really like the direction the arms and chest were going. How did this turn out?
