Thundercats : Sword Of Omens Dagger Build

I hate when I say I'll update in a week and then never get round to it :(

Better late than never though. Had some major issuse with molding before I went away, thook me a while to come up with a plan on how to tackle it, but i'm glad to say I have now nailed it. you will see :)

The handle was pretty straight forward, 2 part box mold, lots of reg keys, easy.

Check out the cast piece, almost perfect, and no flash :)

I made an attempt to mold the entire hilt and blade in one piece, but after a few experiments and some lengthy sessions of staring and pondering I decided against.

Instead I opted to separate the hilt from the blade. never have I been so thankful for only using double-sided tape to bod 2 pieces :)

To mold the hilt I decided to bo a single pour box mold then cut a realease line once it had set. I made the box the same shape as the piece, to reduce the amount of silicone needed.

To be safe, i put pour holes and air vents on each of the 4 high spots of the master, a bit of over kill in hindsight, but better safe than sorry.

This worked reasonably well. there were a few issues with bubbling, not having a de-gassing chamber is a real pain. nothing major, a skim of filler will sort them out in minutes. though I think i will re-mold this later in the week. A coat or 2 of brush on silicone before the box pour should eliminate any bubbles.

The blade was molded with a 2 part box mold. Again i shaped the box to suit the master to reduce the amount on silicone needed.

There were lots of bubbles trapped, but as this is the underside of the mold, it doesn't really matter.

lol, which reminds me >.>

if you do a few thin coats of silicone before pouring the rest, you could reduce or eliminate the bubbles. had the same issue when doing full pours on my projects.

its looking amazing :)

Will you be offering painting services too?

Just putting the finishing touches on one, should be complete in the next day or 2. Once its complete i'll be taking orders for fully completed & painted versions.

Any ideas on price of a fully complete painted one?

And is the full length sword next on the list?

This is good news :) watch out later today for paint updates.

That's unbelievable! I'm definitely interested in a kit as well.

Kits are currently available, checkout the JY thread

First task was to finish the cast pieces, I went ahead and used the cast from the first mold of the hilt piece (it has since been remolded), so there were a few more imperfections and bubbles than I'd like. The seams on the other pieces were quite minimal.

To add some weight to the dagger, give it some realism along with some rigidity I deliberately cast the handle hollow so that i could insert some threaded bar. I used 12mm bar with a bolt. I filled the hollow about 75% full with filler then inserted the bar, cutting away any excess that squiged out. A piece of gas pipe came in handy keeping the handle in place.

I large diameter hole through the hilt piece and a smaller diameter right down into the blade. i made sure they were slightly larger than needed so that i could make adjustment to keep the piece square and aligned.

last was to tidy up the joins, sanding and filling. Then i extended the texture right up to meet the handle.

Time for paint :)

First up, few coats of grey primer then a nice hour of wet sanding, working up to 1200 grit paper to get the piece nice and smooth. Then it was a coat of aluminium coloured paint.

The texture details were painted in by hand, there is so many variations of colour on this piece but this dark green seems to be quite common throughout the reference material I've collected.

The eye was masked off in 2 stages, once for the red and again for the yellow. if truth be told I kind rushed this, so there area couple of tiny speapage spots with the yellow, may very well go over it again next week.

All in all the piece looks fantastic in my opinion. Playing around with the colours next week should be fun and maybe might show better results. Definitely going to look at separate colours for the blade and the hilt/handle.
I'm also going to do a weathered version for my own collection.

I'm quite happy to take orders for finished pieces, so if you keen send me an email. I'll also be working on a couple of display stands, got some interesting ideas. Kits are still available in the JY

Hadn't a great deal of time or money to do much investigation and experimentation with paint. Forgot how much grey/metal can be a pain in the behind.

What aluminum paint did you use? I am tackling a Silver Hawks project, and paint wise all I am finding is metallics that look as though they contain glitter.Ugh!
