Thorssoli's Ironman MkIII Build - Finished Suit Pics Page 26!!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

So what do I have to do to get a full set of miniature armor from you? :D

Unless you've got a particular scale you desperately need, you're better off going with one of the Hot Toys action figures or the like. It'll be cheaper than the material I'd spend trying to reproduce it.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

After the Space Marine build I didn't think anything would be more epic but I stand corrected. This is just too cool and I cannot think of a better person to get his hands on a 3D printer. Rock On!

(Also, don't let Grave see this thread. Someone pooped in his cereal and he's in a mood! :lol)

I will be watching and drooling! :popcorn

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Shawn looks awesome so far! Cannot wait to see this all together

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

That's correct. Once I have the masters done, I'll be molding the parts and the wearable parts will probably be done in chopped strand fiberglass. This will make the parts very lightweight and durable. It also maximizes the amount of room available inside.

Is there any reason that you are going with this method over vacuuming? When I first saw these photos on your recent UFO blog post I assumed that's the method you'd be doing like with your Space Marines. Not having a vacuuforming machine myself I'm not sure what it's limitations are; I'm guessing the parts are too detailed and would lock down easily?

Also I just want to say that your work is a huge inspiration! I've been following your blog for about 8 months and you never cease to amaze. =)

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

This is the exact Ironman build this forum needs

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

why even make the neck in latex? You have the resources to make one with the use of compression articulation. If I can do this with a Pepakura based neck piece, you can do it with a 3d printed piece.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I think I'm in love with Jarvis :lol
That is seriously cool work!

I'm doing the pulls in fiberglass to keep everything lighter than rotocast parts and more detailed than vacformed parts. The Space Marines were well-suited to vacforming because they had a lot of big, smooth pieces. At the opposite extreme you have the Halo Spartan suits I did which had too many tiny details spread all over them. Those ones really lent themselves to rotocasting. If I had the capability to spray fiberglass back when I was working on that project, I probably would've done parts of them that way instead.

why even make the neck in latex?

I may not use latex, but I will definitely make the neck out of some kind of rubber. There are lots of reasons for this. Not the least of which is because that's how the screen-used suit was done. Check out this video at about the 2:15 point: Iron Man: Behind the Scenes - Robert Downey Jr (4/4) - YouTube

Among other reasons, it'll be more comfortable to wear and it'll be easier to reproduce copies in latex. I'll need to do so in order to build the Mk2 as well as the Mk3 and the eventual (seemingly obligatory) War Machine suit.

In other news, Lopez cut out the first of five sets of chest pieces today:

Meanwhile, Jarvis is building the parts for the left hand:

I also did a bit of cleanup on the pelvis piece.

Tonight (while I'm sleeping) Lopez is carving out the 2nd set of chest peices and in the morning I'll start him on the 3rd. Once the left hand is done, I'll have Jarvis get started on some of the chest greeblies.

I also need to come up with a 3D model of the unibeam so I can print it, mold it, and cast copies in clear resin.

Stay tuned...

I'm familiar with the screen used neck piece, but the point that I'm trying to make is why make 'your' neck piece in latex when you can take advantage of the tech that you have to make a solid neck piece and use compression articulation. And it's even more comfortable than a big piece of latex.

Just looked up that printer. Wow. That's a hell of a prize. I can't wait to see the final results. I'm sure it will be flawless. Makes my dream of a Makerbot look like a joke!

I'm trying to duplicate the look of the suit as seen on-screen. If I want to articulate the neck as you've mentioned, I'd have to rearrange some seams and worry about how to keep the different plates from scraping paint off of each other. I'll stick with the simplicity of rubber pieces at the neck, knees, and elbows.

I'm also not going to make any compression articulations for the knuckles.

Makes my dream of a Makerbot look like a joke!

Yeah, I've spent a lot of time looking at the extrusion-type 3D printers and pretty much decided they're not too useful for much of the stuff I'd need them for. Instead I've been waiting for printers like mine to become affordable. Winning the contest just pushed me ahead by about four or five years.

I forgot to take pictures, but today Jarvis made the left hand parts and Lopez stalled at about the 80% point on the third chest carve. Next Jarvis will make the chest greeblies and the wrist guards. Lopez will finish chest carve #3 and all of #4. Hopefully in a couple more days I'll be able to post pics of the assembled chest parts.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

As usual, You tend to blow away everyone when you start a build.. Will look forward to seeing your progress on this incredible Ironman. Way to go.
