Got to Agree. at the end of the day whilst nicely applied and designed , it was a simple foam appliance , hair and teeth. certainly nothing groundbreaking or new.

The makeup was one of the movies few redeeming values. Well. I liked the movie A TON until the stupid fight at the end. I think there had to be a better way to end it than what basically amounts to a superhero knockdown dragout with werewolves.

Hey, if Reznor and Ross can win one for composing incidental music, then why not this?

Baker and Elsey's win was the highlight of the evening for me. It's hard to believe I have been watching him collect little gold dudes for 30 years!

How do any of these things win oscars these days. Reznor as in Trent Reznor? If so i bet he's going to come to Mercer and be insufferable. He's from Mercer, PA about a half hour north of my town.

Not to take anything away from Rick Baker and his crew, but the other nominees for Best Makeup were Barney's Version and The Way Back. Anyone heard of either film? Me neither. To my knowledge neither film required any makeups that were as elaborate as Baker's work on The Wolfman, so that's one reason.

Edit 03/05/11: BTW, since I forgot to mention it when I originally posted this, I liked the movie (though I could have done without the aforementioned knockdown/dragout, even though I saw it coming) and Baker's makeup design, which I thought was a terrific update of Jack Pierce's design. I think the teeth/fangs were a little overdone though and limited Del Toro's ability to open and close his mouth, because the Wolfman only had two facial expressions--mouth open, mouth closed (different teeth used for each).

For one thing, I like the fact that they stayed faithful to the appearance from the Lon Cheney Jr. Wolfman. It's Wolf-MAN. I hate morphs into a full blown Wolf ala Twilight. For one thing as a WolfMAN They are stronger and far more dangerous to deal with, There's just enough human being in them to make them more intelligent, and that whole Opposible thumb issue, well a Wolf isn't going to take your gun away from you and use it to club you a few times before enjoying his happy meal.

I absolutely loved The Wolfman. It was nothing groundbreaking. It was a simple good old fashioned monster movie. Nothing more.

Baker's makeup was fantastic. He stayed faithful to the classic and to me, it's what a werewolf/Wolfman should look like. I am so sick of the Hound from Hell look. Though American Werewolf in London is one of my favorite Werewolf movies, I have a little bit of hatred for it for changing the genre.

I was more upset with Daft Punk not even getting a nom for one of the most amazing soundtracks ever TRON LEGACY!! I have yet to stop playing it constantly.

The movie was awful, mostly due to the worst acting job I've ever seen come out of Del Toro. The makeup was great though. Problem was it would cut to the laughable CGI in the blink of an eye so it was hard to tell which was which. Here's how.
If he looked stupid it was CGI.
If he looked like a really great interpretation of the LCJ Wolfman, it was makeup.

This film has really grown on me since the first viewing. I was initially dissapointed, but I keep going back to it.
