The white push buttons in Star Trek TOS

After many months of researching them myself a couple years ago, it's my opinion that they were never an actual commercially available button but rather something created especially for the show to hide the simple and inexpensive lamp-style common ON/OFF push buttons. They made a cast of a rounded off 1/2" dowel rod and a bezel from some washers. These painted creations were mounted over the lamp buttons and looked a lot more sci-fi and unique.

I'm not 100% certain about my belief but couldn't find any evidence to the contrary. And it wasn't from a lack of trying.

You know what? I always thought they looked like 50's - 60's era white lamp covers, myself. But, the bezel always threw me off. I've never seen one with that kind of wiper-like shoulder. Usually it is a chamfered or concave bezel.

And, just so I'm clear, none of those buttons ever lit up, right?

I heard they were refrigerator door buttons.I've been researching on ASAP for building a captains chair(tos) think i;ll go with the wooden dowel nylon spacer and washer.I may cast the parts along with the round buttons and triangles.

Funky Jedi,

The white buttons being discussed are used on Kirk's chair. There is a row of 5 of the buttons on the right arm of the chair. You can't quite make them out in my avatar but a quick google search should turn up some good photos.

The buttons are used on other areas of the ship as well. One place that comes to mind are the red plate intercom stations used throughout the ship.

Interesting discussion. Looking forward to a discovery if they were indeed found items.

Ted.

Hello The White buttons were originally from a 60s fridge,They would do us no good as they are normally closed meaning your lights would always be on,except when you pushed it in.I plan on using momentary buttons underneath my fabricated ones. Each one will be a different recording from the original series

Prefect 42 I've seen your posts on ASAP,Thanks for the info

Now that you mention it, I do recall seeing those shaped buttons in fridge doors when I was a kid. But I do not think they were as big as what we saw on ST TOS. While they may have inspired the Trek buttons I still believe they were created special for the show to go over standard ON/OFF push buttons of some kind.

Yes, I noticed that about 30 years ago. I was asking why he had a pic of a chair in progress with no further information. :rolleyes
