The Walking Dead Season 4

A spear is good if the zombies are contained and you can jab them but no good if you are getting swarmed by two or three, once they're past the spear tip they would be on you before you could pull it back.

Better than swords would be spears and other pole arms which could be fashioned fairly easily with any knife that you can find and secure it to the end of a pole which can be found in nearly every household in the form of a broom or mop. The benefit is that in open ground it gives a reach advantage over a walker and if they can't get close to you they can't bite you. Thinking of this it kind of makes me wonder why we haven't seen more improvised weapons in the show, between kitchen implements and gardening tools there's plenty of stuff lying around that could be easily turned into a weapon. They may not be the best weapons or the prettiest but they'd be better than no weapon and most would work well enough against a zombie.

Ah yes COMBO weapons like Dead Rising 3! Love that game and the combos you can make are nuts.

On the topic of the bikes that would be a smart option for sure... and very quiet unlike a car that would attract attention. At least for lesser dangerous parts the bicycle would be a wonderful way to get around. On screen maybe it doesn't look as "cool" though. Practical and easy form of transportation. Off road though you'd be screwed in those woods.

That is true. That's where he encountered the half-Walker in the park, seeing the horror of what happened while he was out for the first time up close.

I don't think in the whole series I have ever seen someone riding a bike! Surely every home would have at least one, and if you can't get petrol why walk? They are a lot faster than walking and zombies, and can carry a lot of weight. During the Vietnam war most supplies were brought up the Ho chi minh trail by bike, some carrying 400 lbs:eek
Seems like a sword is the best tool for the job, so instead of using kitchen knives and screwdrivers where you have to get close why didn't they start using swords. must be plenty of museums they could get them from and Michonne could teach technique.

Museums are typically located in cities... the cities are the last place you want to be. Most of the swords you find today are impractical because they're not really made to fight with but to display. They're typically poorly made with cheap steel. Even a decent one would need sharpened often (not that Michonne ever seems to need to).

Bicycles are something that I think are avoided because they look kind of funny. In WWZ when they came out on bikes, a lot of people laughed. They do also have some drawbacks... limited protection, tires can be punctured pretty easily, chains can pop off and their speed is limited to that of the rider. So far it seems there hasn't been much issue getting vehicles or gas. So I guess, why bother risking it.

This brings to mind the term museum piece, I'm not entirely sure that I'd trust my life to something that's centuries old and really hasn't been kept in working/functional condition. Most modern made swords, as mentioned, aren't much better being either made from low quality metal which won't hold an edge and/or won't handle any impact without breaking other blade will have a rat tail tang which means that the blade will snap off at the hilt when it hits anything with much resistance. A perfect example of how "good" most modern swords are just search for the video where some guy on TV on some sort of QVC like show is demonstrating a katana that they're selling and you'll see just how worthless most modern swords are against an actual opponent. That's not to say there aren't what are known as battle ready swords being made these days but they're far fewer around and much harder to come by than your typical wall hanger.

What about Battle Ready swords?

Funny. I actually came across information on a zombie story that follows three people who were bicycling across the U.S. at the time of the outbreak, and the story involves their attempt to get back home on bike. I can't remember the name of the story, but I came across the trailer for it.

But to be honest, there is an upside to the bicycle. I actually watched that same scene you pointed out, and I realized, "That's a good idea. It doesn't make any noise, you can ride past a dozen of them and they wouldn't hear you."

Battle ready swords would be a good option if you can find them, it's not like you can just walk into any cutlery store and expect to to find a battle ready swords just lying around. Now if you happened to live near a forge that makes battle ready swords that would be different although I'd imagine that the owners and employees would take any finished swords they might have on hand. Of course if you lived in India that would be a different matter since they make a ton of supposedly battle ready swords for various online dealers.

Oh they definitely have some advantages... and disadvantages. You can also get through tighter obstacles... but can also hit something relatively small and at 20 mph wipe out and do some significant damage to yourself if your not adequately protected. I speak from experience on this one. I was fortunate that when that happened to me it was in front of an urgent care clinic and not a horde of hungry zombies.

Also, while you might be able to get past a dozen of them undetected, in a solid vehicle, a dozen of them don't really pose a threat. But that's also assuming you can... as you can be just as quiet on foot and that doesn't seem to keep them from noticing.

Basically, I think a bicycle is great for a short mission where you have a laid out path and plan. It's a preferable alternative to running if you've got the right terrain. I'm just not sure it's the best option, long term.

A few of you probably saw this. I posted it to the Stone Cutters group on facebook, but if you haven't seen it, here is where everyone is at and which day they are on.

Good to see some forward momentum tonight. It was time. A little navel gazing goes a long way. I don't recall what happens with the Washington angle in the comics, but I'm feeling goid about where this is going. The guy they got for Abraham is perfect.

What came to my mind when.....

Rick came climbing out the bathroom window...

WalkingDieHard.jpg

BTW, anyone notice that the jacket he wears when he comes out of the bathroom so happens to be the very same one he wears in the comics, minus the sheriff patches?

Sorry, but the scientist with the answer to the world plaque wouldn't have a mullet. :)

Don't judge a scientist by his hair. Albert Einstein looked like he always woke up on the wrong side of the bed or stuck his finger in an electrical outlet, and he presented the Theory of Relativity.

I kept waiting for the dead guy on the floor to turn. I guess that's what finally happened later when all the commotion came from the house making the guy on the porch go back in.

I guess the amount of time it takes someone to turn is plot dependet (i.e. when its convenient) considering Shane turned almost right away, but that guy on the floor seemed to be there a long time

You did watch tonight's episode right? Because that bit with Rick waking up with intruders in the house was pretty freakin' suspenseful in my opinion.
Agreed...it was the first time I felt on edge watching the show in ages. Hallelujah! I'd love to feel more danger in the show again. The whole zombie apocalypse thing was starting to feel almost incidental.

I thought that guy was just choked unconscious. I could be wrong.

Yes, the guy by the bed was still breathing.
