The Walking Dead Season 3

Well I guess the Govt thinks it's possible, they gave money to Homeland Security for training on it, no joke here's an article today. Feds waste anti-terror funding on a ?zombie apocalypse? training exercise - NYPOST.com

It's not so much as they think that such a thing is really possible as much as that the whole zombie apocalypse thing is popular so it puts sort of a fun twist on their training. Basically, preparing for a fictional zombie apocalypse prepares government agencies for pretty much any scenario because it involves a breakdown in society, a breakdown in the government and governmental services, add to that mass confusion, panic, looting, and just general chaos. So it's not so silly a thing as it might seem at first, it's serious training with a shiny facade over it.

I really hate when they spin this as wasteful. Hell, at least they're not firing ammo into the sky.

The government folks gotta have fun to. Maybe they should start them off in an abandoned hospital.:confused

Plus, with the various epidemics that have been popping up, putting together a scenario where you're dealing with the Zombie Apocalypse (especially if you consider it a viral outbreak) is very useful. We had someone from the CDC come to my work for a distaster preparedness exercise based around the zombie apocalypse which was actually very interesting. There's even a website for the Federal Zombie and Vampire administration if you google it. :)

Agreed, the people who complain about these zombie apocalypse drills fail to realize that these drills would apply to real world epidemics and that's why they do them. Thinking of it, I think the zombie apocalypse theme makes for very good window dressing and by doing so it will be less likely to cause panic amongst the more easily panicked.

I have to say, it sounds like it might be fun to work for the Federal Zombie and Vampire Administration. At the very least it would make for a pretty good conversation starter at parties and imagine the fun it would be to go up before Congress if you were nominated to the head of the FZV, assuming that head of the FZA would require a congressional hearing.

Rewatching the midseason finale right now...I just figured out why Michonne went to attack the Governor. For 7-8 months, Michonne has had exactly one person to talk to. She may not be the touchy feely type, but Andrea was Michonne's best friend in the whole world until the Governor stole her away. During the fight, you have to watch her face. She realizes the Governor has lost it and doesn't understand what walkers are. She also realizes that killing the kid will cause the Governor the same pain he caused her. Then, afterwards, when Andrea shows up and defends Guv, Michonne realizes that no amount of vengeance will ever bring her friend back. That's why she just leaves. And then later, when she begs Rick to let her stay, you can see that she doesn't want to end up like the Governor. Michonne is easily just as insane as Rick and the Governor, but because of isolation instead of grief. I also think that the last scene was the moment that Michonne realizes how much she's screwed up over the past few days. That's why she offers to help get Daryl back.

I can't wait to see where they go with Tyreese. He's the most grateful person on the show. His interactions with Carl are awesome.

Yeah, that was my impression when I saw Michonne kill Penny. After hearing how the governor talked about her and then seeing the fear on his face and dropping his weapon, Michonne realized how much he cared for her. She killed Penny because she wanted to hurt the governor.

Just noticed that the doors are unlocked to the Gov's secret room and sword girl just walks right in. I didnt catch it the first time as its a sword girl scene and I just want it to go away, but noticed it this time.

the writing's not improving much. lot of this has been mentioned, but
- michonne (who seems to be determined to do the series in her best Booker T impersonation) is again the anchor dragging the show to a stop. so not only is she a ninja, she can take a greater beating than most of the other characters have got.
- apparently this ninja thinks the best thing you can do w/ a sword is choke someone w/ it
- i'm betting from the amount of blood etc that she's severed every tendon in the fingers of the hand that pulled the glass out, though i'm betting that'll never be addressed.
- hey, i'll just stay in the room in plain sight, so when he does come in, he'll be right by the door and could easily escape/shout for help/shoot me before i can get up off this chair i'm in trying to look so grim and cool.
- apparently although Booker/Michonne is about 2ft taller than zombiebrat the Gov didn't have a clear enough shot to put one through her head or shoulder.
- what IS it w/ zombiebrat anyway? total lack of zombie behaviour when she should have been squirming and thrashing all the time to get to michonne or the Gov for meat.
- apparently there's massive gaps in the prison walls that they casually announce that walkers can get in through etc, but they don't seem overly bothered about that.
- total skate-over of Darryl's capture, for whatever reason :-/
- is it really logical that a wall guard would just wander into a building shouting for people to come out? By HIMSELF?
- why in ******'s name is Rick intent on always holding his pistol w/ the barrel drooping to the ground? did it supposedly look cool in a poster or promo still so they make him do it all the time? is that long barrel just too heavy?

re some other comments, i've done aikido, akijustsu and iaido. Kendo and fencing would not help you use a katana correctly. iaido teaches drawing and cutting as one movement. some of the moves in our school taught locks and throws, but it was from a hand grab etc that was trying to stop your draw your sword - you'd turn the grip into a wrist lock and move to draw and cut etc, but the iaido class was to teach iaido, it didn't teach hand to hand. i can't speak for anyone else's schools, but for hand to hand i had to take different classes/disciplines.
it does not, however, teach you to do an oh-so-clever twirl before a cut, nor does it suggest the best way to wear a sword is across your back.

I think the real issue with Michonne is that she hasn't gotten enough exposition. Her actions don't seem to track. I mean, I get that she's been isolated and it's driven her kinda nuts. But they haven't fully played that up. I get that she's close with Andrea, but they haven't quite played up HOW close she is. When she was asking Andrea to leave with her, I didn't get a sense of desperation or pleading. Just paranoia which seemed largely overblown given what she knew about Woodbury at the time. The suspicion, the fear, it all seemed to come from nowhere. Like, you've found this idyllic place and maybe it feels too good to be true, but they wrote her -- and she was acted -- as if she was some caged animal who could only truly feel safe outside the walls.

I think the threads are there to pick up as far as her motivations go, but they aren't quite being shown to the audience in as clear a fashion as I think would work well. I don't think she's dragging down the show, though. It's every bit as exciting and engaging as ever, to me.

Fyi, she was choking with the sheath. In most schools of swordsmanship, both Eastern and Western, the sheath is just as much a weapon as the sword is. You can use it for blocking, choking, and bludgeoning. And all of your comments lead me to further believe that Michonne is a total geek, since she has clearly gone out of her way to learn the finer tenants of bushido. It's actually perfectly possible to learn that on today's day and age. I know because I've been working on it myself. And given the way she draws the sword and the way she moves, carrying the sword on her back is the best position. You can move your legs with greater range when you don't have a sword smacking them every two seconds. (This is an issue I have with the parkour in Assassin's Creed. His long sword would get hung up on everything.) The twirls are very much a Western flair, but when done properly you can actually use a twirl to increase the speed and momentum of a swing. That's why the Arabs had such a fancy style during the crusades, and it's also the principle behind the meteor hammer. As for the beating, she's had a limp the entire time and didn't get beat nearly as long as Glen did. She got hit pretty hard for about five minutes, Glen got hit pretty hard for the better part of a day. I'll give you the hand issue, but given that the Guv was okay after a glass shard to the eye, it's safe to say it's just rule of drama.
But yeah, Rick's muzzle control is a bit lax.

She's clearly a wookiee. Chewie had the same problem in Cloud City. Racism ftw~
On a serious note, I think we'll find out soon enough. The writers are pushing her persona to its limits, in a way that makes me think there's definite backstory to be told. But after season 2 they don't want to "waste" time on talking.
