The Walking Dead Season 2 Trailer

Wouldn't power station reactors melt down pretty quickly without coolants etc. functioning?

They may have fail safes, automatic shut-down procedures in place. I don't know since I'm not a nuke plant guy. I imagine there would be some Fukushima type accidents waiting to happen.

The world would be FUBAR!

Natural disasters (fires, floods, tornados, tsunamis, hurricanes) would have no clean up.

Power plants run by water dams may continue to work for a long time though. Windmills could run electricity. Electricity would still work in places. Some places with generators (hospitals, jail/prisons) would be able to work as long as fuel was available. I'm sure there are tanker trucks full of fuel in places.

That would make for some interesting episodes. Can you imagine a walker getting ready to bite into our good man, Daryl Dixon only to get carried away ala Twister style in a tornado? That would be awesome.

Another way to look at it is chances are this didn't happen instantly. So if the whole zombie apocalypse grew to the level it's at, what are the chances that any nuke plants were ordered to shut down in the event that no one was able to monitor and maintain them?

There was actually an article a few years ago that actually addressed these questions specifically geared toward a zombie infestation and power stations.

Hydro and wind would go until they broke down and no one was there to fix them. Coal would be worthless as soon as there was no one there to load the coal in. Nuclear could go for a little while, depending on the steps that were taken when the plants were evacuated.

Ah! Here it is:
The Straight Dope: When the zombies take over, how long till the electricity fails?

However, it doesn't seem to address the possiblity of a meltdown (that I can find)... So I assume there are fail safes to keep that from happening.

Nice article. Eventually, maybe in a few years a melt down would occur and we would have glow in the dark walkers. I really hope someone actually makes a smart zombie show/movie one day that will explore all these possibilities.

fuel degrades tho, so takerfuls wouldn't mean jack after a time.

Funniest thing about Darrel is the first time I seen him I thought to myself "thats Rob from Stereo MC's". Have a look and listen, even the lyrics fit.

Stereo MC's Deep Down & Dirty - YouTube

I'm here to stay
Make you pay and understand
That there ain't no other day but today
Now I'm livin' it up
Now I'm livin' it up
There ain't nothing bringing me down so don't even try
I'll size you up, I'll size you down
Besides you round this crazy uptight town
This burning with love and hate
The things you can't understand
There's too small a grate
I can't wait for this time to come
I can't wait for this time to come...

I think the best bet to keep the human race alive would honestly be to nuke the major cities so you can be sure to vaporize the largest populations of walkers. Taking out New York alone would take out 8 million of them. Hitting the top 10 populated cities in the country would take out 25 million of them.

Is it crazy? Will it release a bunch of radioactive debris and dust into the air? Will innocent people die too? Yes to all of those. But you don't have enough bullets, skill or protection to kill all of them.
There's a really good book series called: Day By Day Armageddon, where they do just that. The result is millions of "hot" walkers, that can sicken/kill you (depending on the number one encountered all at once) just by being in close proximity for certain period of time. In addition, the irradiated walkers are viable/smarter/more coordinated a lot longer than the non-radioactive variety.

The books are definitely worth a look, & the third installment is due out next year...

I read Day by Day Armageddon when it was being put out a chapter at a time online and thought it was an interesting read. I dont know if I would pay for it, thus I don't know how things wrapped up, if at all in the series. It was neat with the nuked walkers though and I was going to bring it up but you beat me to the punch.

Power Systems guy here.

Nuke plants would likely be shut down prior to the ***** really hitting the fan, and in the case of a major catastrophic event like a zombie apocalypse overnight, there are many fail-safes in place to prevent going into a meltdown.

Solar facilities, some hydro units, and most of the wind generation plants would be able to continue to output until some kind of mechanical failure prevents them from working. Same with geothermal, but that's a little different and a bit less common.

Steam units and coal fired units are a no-go. Without fuel sources, there's no way for them to generate.

The good news is, even with such a small amount of generation, the significant reduction in the load on the transmission system means we'd likely be capable of continuing to function. As long as there aren't a lot of downed lines (most of which would be smaller distribution feeders anyway), there's no reason we couldn't continue to have a decent electricity for the few survivors who are capable of using it.

Adam, you know how to use a gun and are smart enough to carry some extra ammo? If yes, get in and close the van door.

If the rumors are true we are going to get a T Dog backstory and see one of the most awesome characters from the comics when the second half of the season starts.
