Ok,

Doing a quick bit of research and seeing if anybody has a fresh look at what I already know.

In the movie, the timeframe is what? Early / Late 1930`s?

Baldwin should be early thirties from what his character looks like in the movie?

And I`m working on getting the address to the Cobalt Club....It would make a great shirt.

Anybody got anything different?

I'm not a Shadow scholar by any means, and I have no particular information other than Lamont Cranston has the power to cloud men's minds.

And, I have to say, if I had the power to cloud men's minds, I'm pretty sure I'd pick a mid-30s Alec Baldwin to make people think I looked like. :)

I think its set in the 20's. Late 20s. Its too clean, everyone is still rich. its pre-dustbowl.

And yeah. Early thirties.

Love that movie! I would think at least late 30's with the art deco, cars, and the atomic bomb reverence which wouldn't come about until 1944 ( if history serves me correct ). There is also the reference of him being some kind of Mongolian warrior, or just a thug from China in his younger days. Hmmmm Now you have me wondering about timeframe loop holes!

Its one of those retro alternate futures like in alot of the radio shows and i think the movie ran with that and mixed it all up. i think the radio show took place in the 30s but could be earlier. The movie always seemed like it sorta mixed up a bunch of the timelines then again the radio show may have had a long run. I mean some radio shows didn't end until the 50s.

Very underrated movie.

I never really appreciated it until AFTER I started listening to the old radio shows on XM Radio and noted how closely the film tried to stay to the spirit of the source material.

I wondered about an address when I did the matchbooks. I didn't see it mentioned in any of the pulps. I decided to just give a mid-town phone number.

Wolf...

I have the address. Let me know if you need it. Do you have a pic of the matchboks that you did?

The radio show ran from 1938-1954. They were combining elements from the radio Shadow and the pulp novel Shadow.

Wolf,

You have an email.

And it looks like I should post pics of some of my Shadow props....Including my v2 costume.

Anybody interested?

Official Movie site says 1930`s New York.

Early 1930's sounds about right. Cranston was a vet of WWI, which ended in 1918. He studied with the Tulku for 7 years. Taking a few years to get to Tibet and becoming a major opiate lord is reasonable enough. That would place the time in the late 1920's or early 1930's.

Yes! :)

Not that it matters setting wise, but some of the cars in the movie were well into the forties models. There was even a bus from the fifties.

IMCDb.org: "The Shadow, 1994": cars, bikes, trucks and other vehicles

I particularly love the mid/late thirties('36-'37?) Cord "taxi" that he gets around in.

I'd guess they were trying something like the first Batman movie or Payback, where you can't really tell what year it's supposed to be. Just a general idea of when it might have been.

its easy guys.

when alec baldwin is first in the cobalt club, his uncle (chief of police) says something like "I've never pried into your affairs, even after the war, when you disappeared out east for several years"

so it puts into at least the late 1920's but judging from the womens fashions it has to be the 1930's mid 30's is likely. there is no hangover from the 1920's flapper styles. cranstons clothing in particular is set from that era.

it isn't late 1930's as there was a distinct change in cuts of suits etc that is lacking in the movie.

See,

That is why I love this forum. You guys have brought up a ton of great points that I totally missed.

Let me pull up a pic of my v2 of the costume:

Not happy with it yet. Gotta get the right material for the scarf....which brings me to the next question. Looking at all of the screentime at his red scarf...what kind of material would you all agree on? A heavier silk or something else? I reall want to email the member here who has the screen used costume and ask them what the heck its made of....opinions?

Well this may be total opinion, but I think silk is good.It would throw back to the "Asian" history of the character. Not to mention, it's light, comfortable, and easy to breath through.

If you guys have some paper props available, I would love to see some of your stuff![COMMENT][/COMMENT]

Nice pic! Do you have the holster rig and 45s?

As to the scarf, from the look in this image, I'd say silk, or very very high thread count linen. Silk would be much easier to breath through.

I ran across this page digging up the image. They list the coat as being made from wool, but no indication on the scarf. You might be able to ask them what they use?????

Baron Boutique: Movie replica

Edit: I checked a little deeper and they already make silk scarves (ultra-light weight, 90g), so they probably use silk. While they do offer linen clothing, it's a much heavier weight and probably not suitable for scarves.

Drewid,

Yup,

I do have the longslide 45`s in a rare airsoft model that I found on EBay, and had repainted...pics will follow. The shoulder holster rig I had custom made from a member here. Its only one of three made ever. The hat I had custom made at a hat maker here in Chicago....wide brim and all. Believe it or not. I found the coat at a local Burlington Coat factory outlet here in the Chicago suburbs and did an easy quick modification on it it make it screen accurate. Now back to the scarf, I`m thinking I need to start to go looking at a heavier silk in the right color...
