If you wanted to leave the caps over the screw head end unglued for future access, you can lay a piece of saran wrap over the screw assembly, put a strong mini magnet on top of the screw head (on top of saran wrap), then take, some epoxy putty and push the cap with epoxy onto the magnet, making sure to center, allow to set. Voila, removable cap secured by a magnet. :) I did that with the TIE hero build for the panels covering the armature connectors.

Okay, now do the same with the remaining leg segments so that they are arranged like so:

For the pincers, I have decided to embed a threaded bolt into one of the caps. It will pass through the middle disc (freely) and then will bore into the other end cap, by twisting the first cap (it is essentially now a large headed bolt, lol). Since this photo was taken, I have filled the crater with Apoxie Sculpt which will really lock the bolt into the whole assembly. Then I will glue each pincer to one of the caps, and this should allow them to remain posable.

It kinda looks how i imagined, you got the orientation right at least Jason lol.
Anyways, the uppermost damper mount......seems you guys have a T strip section, there should be a part from the Morser Karl in the mix there, its the mounting point for the T strip that is already fitted, an easy fix.

So you glue one prong of pincher part A to left cap and one prong of other pincher part B to the right cap? Then the unglued prongs will simply ride the curvature of the joint as it swivels. I like it.
 
I think you may find it easier to do the joints if you stick with the tried and rested route, been looking over the thread and it does look like more effort is required to do it this way. You need to drill out one of the saturn V cones on each joint to gain access to the cap head screw.

Just one hole in the last joint needs to be made smaller to to self tap the screw in, both mine and Lees legs are made with Resin inserts in the ABS so its pretty much the exact same for the kit version. As long as you can get the hole bang centre it should be easy to get a good tight join.

They aren't designed to be played with everyday, thats why the ILM legs are battered and repaired as they are fragile in plastic. Once you've got em past finger tight they lock up great and can be tweaked for fun without ever going back to adjust the screw.

If your screws are longer than the 3 discs stacked then just drill out a small hole in the reverse side of the opposite saturn V knuckle so its invisible at one end. You should only see the cap end through one of the knuckles. I promise it will be easier doing it this way
 
They are a PITA to get centred Jason, we had the benefit of being able to scrap a joint if it was off, I dont envy you having to do it on discs that are part of the leg.

Re the Karl part lee is talking about I think it was a repair done after production so left it off mine, I cant remember if there is a pic of the PD without though so its a matter of taste.

Its not visible in Chronicles!
 
Guy, do you have a pic of the access hole on the joint covers on the one you made? Also - how did you assemble the pincers using that method when the caps are the outer hinge pieces themselves? Thanks!
 
Yeah, I'm tempted to add the wires... I think it looks cool.

I'm not uptight about überaccuracy™ so it won't haunt me.

I'm just on my way out to hunt shipping boxes but will post a pic later, on a couple of the smaller pincer joints I cheated. its a section of knitting needle inserted into the abs tube, the abs is glued to the leg and then 2 more discs glued to each claw. They then just slip over the knitting needle.
 
No worries on these legs. Jason's method allowed me to build the whole leg in just under 2 hrs. I will admit that I drilled and tapped each side for the screws which seemed to actually spped up the process for me. I already have the pincer knuckle to the tightness I like, and just need to add the pincers to that. Think I'll slide some masking tape between the disks as I glue that pincer on, to keep CA out of the space between disks. Then repeat for the other pincer half. :)

And because the pincer connection is so thin and fragile, I am gonna bulk up on the outside with epoxy I think.
