The Probe Droid Resin Kit Instructions Tread

It actually is pretty straightforward if a bit tedious at first, and I guess therefore easy? LOL. A lot can be said for scratch building these legs, and a lot can be said for resin - I'm having my cake and eating it too by making both, and I feel very fortunate that there are people in my life that have been supportive about all aspects of this and every build.

This is light years ahead of the old Probe Droid kit, because this was actually designed to be a kit! (LOL) And yeah, Mike's castings are AWESOME. Seasoned model makers and novice builders who want to dive into the scary pool of studio scale will find something to grin about with this model, and I'm happy/honored to suss all the parts out in this thread. Like Lee and Guy have alluded to, having posable legs is just the best!! These are an acceptable solution in resin, too, which was a concern I had that passed, as I got into the nitty gritty. Not super hard core rivet-counter-accurate, but it definitely has a "wow!" factor!

Once you're past all five legs, the rest will seem like cake. Except the electronics - the antenna mechanisms are going to be a "hope this crap in my head translates into the real world" situation. I'm crossing my fingers on that one!

Hey Jason, that's looking pretty good, the bottom half of this leg is one of the ones that i added some "meat" to (about 1.5mm in height) because the on the old kit it was voted most likely to be a pretzel.

Just an FYI to anyone getting started, I will be sending Dave some waves of the 3 tiny bits that go on the head soon. I am molding them up along with Epod stuff over the next week or so......if you think this has a lot of parts just wait for that, I think i am going to have 15 full 4x6 molds of just greeblies, never mind engines, bottom, top, body etc. I also have been running the Dr evil part for the Y as i go, hang tight on those.
thanks
mike

Next leg!

Do the thing with the stuff...

And do it again... and make sure the leg parts are oriented like you see below:

Guys you look to have a part from the Tamiya M16 fitted to the mid section of this leg.
You could if you wanted to, further accurize this with correct part from the Tamiya 88mm that was ID'd last week, after a two year search, its worth the addition, and a simple shave and replace too!

Lee

Two years to find a piece that ended up coming from the 88mm? That's a pretty popular donor. I presume the available ref is what held you up?

No Q, the fact it took that long for two guys thereabout to ID the whole model.
This part straggled for a long time, covered in glue, and teased, then, the rest is history, and we hand out the info of that hard work, right on this very board my good friend!

Lee

Yep. Hope I got it right:
Okay, pincer mounts just like the previous leg:

Everything glued down like this:

This is the part Guy and Lee IDed from the 88mm Tamiya kit (36/37). It's $25 on Amazon, and contains other Probe Droid parts. It's definitely a "gateway" donor kit, like the Karl and Leopold... you will see these parts all over a LOT of models:

I guess both sides are supposed to have this detail?

Much better, though its placement is further into the joint and sanded round, its almost an extra bit of bite to support the joint discs.
I wouldnt worry J, its fine where it is!

Lee

Yeah, I was trying to place it onto the leg so that it made sense, spatially, where it extends away from the joint in relation to the plant on just North of the part. This pic was a tough call:

This one clears it up a little:

But I think I will leave it, as shifting it closer to the joint will throw the over all look of the leg off. It's a good compromise for this iteration of the build!

Your call mate, ill waiver my consultancy fee, no win, no fee, this time :)
At least you get a dummy run for your ultimate hero set in styrene, thats when it really gets serious!

Lee

I can throw the 88 part in with the mold for those little head greeblies, they will be easy to swap out.

What goes in the lower leg section in this kit? Mike? Dave?

Make sure you glue this greeblie to the lower leg segment only, so the upper leg can hinge freely:

Glue the greeblie into the upper hollow as shown:
