The Penultimate Majora's Mask: FINISHED - LAST PAGE

I only say "penultimate" because it's only a matter of time until someone makes one better.:rolleyes

Either way, this is my recent obsession. I've been thinking about the game a lot lately (since I've started replaying it) and have talked to a few friends recently about just how great this game is. I'm completely possessed by its themes and subtext, and moody, dark atmosphere.

To commemorate my love, I've turned my attention to the antagonistic mask of the game. By the end of the project, I want light up eyes and horns that rattle; things that the mask was shown to do in the game but brought to reality. My whole approach to the project is what I think the mask would be like if it existed in reality; taking into consideration the lore, the capabilities, and artwork done for the mask that the technology of the time just couldn't render, as well as what it looked like in the game. Pretty much an amalgam of everything, really, but look-wise, slightly leaning more towards the promo art for the game (curved/different sized horns, and more curvaceous mask shape, as well as smaller aesthetics things).

Here's what I've done so far:

Built the base I'm gonna be sculpting on with sheets of home insulation foam, sanded smooth and shapely, sealed with three coats of Modge Podge:

Slapped on a thin layer of modeling clay to work with (gotta be resourceful) and spent an ungodly amount of time smoothing, blending, trimming, sculpting the clay so that the surface is as symmetrical as I can possibly get it to be.

Just as much effort went into the position of the eyes. As soon as I got happy with were I had them (I had to do it four times until i looked "right") I showed just how uneven the base was and how uneven my clay layer was because of it. So, an even more ungodly amount of time was spent fixing most of that as well.

So after that, this is where it stands now.

There'll be plenty more of where this came from; we're not done yet.

Cool idea. I'd like to make one of these someday, because my husband is a huge LoZ fan. Going to be watching your thread with interest.

Here's where I last left it:

And here's where it was last night after 8-10 hours worth of finicky blending, smoothing, and re-sculpting later.

Still a ways to go but the horns are up next after the face is done and then the eyes.

Re: The Penultimate Majora's Mask: WIP

It's getting close. In fact, so close, it's practically done! A little bit more smoothing, but other than that, I fixed most of what I wanted today as well as adding a few finishing touches.

I just need to do the eyes now and then it's off for molding. Just as soon as I get some more supplies.

This is fantastic, I can't wait to see how it turns out

Re: The Penultimate Majora's Mask: WIP

Sorry for the lack of updates and pics, but I spent a few days reworking the entirety of the "brow" and "forehead"; I didn't like the proportions of the carvings and there were some issues with symmetry. It's currently partially molded in silicone as I wait for more materials to arrive (hoping for a delivery tomorrow).

Beyond that, the eyes and horns are sculpted and molded but again, I'm needing for not only materials to show up but some extra funding as well. I'm aiming to get this thing casted, finished, and just plain done in the next week or two.

Stay tuned...

Re: The Penultimate Majora's Mask: WIP

looking forward to an update, mask looks great!

Re: The Penultimate Majora's Mask: WIP

Great to hear it's already partially moulded! Looking forward to the next update :)

Re: The Penultimate Majora's Mask: WIP

Okay, update time:

Got the sculpt molded in silicone and the support shell around it and, by all accounts, it's alright...

...With the exception of trapped air bubble that never made their way to the surface. I think I have to invest in a pressure chamber in the future so that these can be avoided. Putting it on in thin layers at a time can only go so far, it looks.

It's almost negligible but just seeing them in the mold is really disheartening, but it should be okay for the most part; it just means more cleaning later on. While looking at it, I thought it looked a bit thin around the edges. I originally thought of having cardstock around the edges so I might layer on some more silicone but then I realized it was far too risky for me to do and not fudge up the entire thing.

SOLUTION: Put the mold back on the sculpt and just carve chunks out of the base and fill the undercuts with more silicone.

And this is where it sits until I get to work on it more tomorrow.

Re: The Penultimate Majora's Mask: WIP

Looks great! I wouldn't worry too much about the bubbles in the mould, that's very minimal clean-up :thumbsup

Re: The Penultimate Majora's Mask: WIP

awesome work! looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Re: The Penultimate Majora's Mask: WIP

And here it is, the first pull:

002.JPG

Pictured with it are four of the ten horns that needed the most work on the seam lines. Tomorrow, I plan on sanding and painting up the horns some and cutting out the eyes and then prepping the mask for painting.

On a side note: if Smoot-On Onyx wasn't made for the sole purpose of casting Vader's helmet, I don't know what to think anymore.

Re: The Penultimate Majora's Mask: WIP

Ah, ran into a bit of a pickle last night.

After shaving and sanding it all down to what I liked, I took the piece I molded for the eyes and fit it into the eye sockets to see where it was going. Bad news: it doesn't fit, so now I'm re-sculpting the puck for the eyes and, whilst re-sculpting, I wondered if I would have to do this with each casting. Figured I might if each casting I do is, to some degree, varying in thickness.

Terrible foresight, in my part.

I'm thinking on how about modifying my mold, specifically, the depth of the eyes. I'm thinking of extending the eye "plugs" in the mold so the the casts come out with the eyes already "empty", unlike my test pull.
