The Lesser-Known Christmas Movies

gremlins, ghostbusters 2, eyes wide shut, enemy of state, batman returns, psycho, das boot, band of brothers, rocky iv, sleepless in seattle, reindeer games, l.a.confidential, kiss kiss bang bang, trading places

That is NOT a lesser-known Christmas movie! I watch it yearly! A better example would be Die Hard 2.

I've had arguments with people about whether Die Hard actually counts as a Christmas movie before. I think it does, but for some people Christmas movies must have Santa or they don't count. (Then again, I argue that Lord of the Rings is perfect for Christmas.)

I'm with you on this, Die Hard is definitely a Christmas movie in my book. There's Christmas music, "Ho-Ho-Ho" is said, and somebody wears a Santa hat. It counts.

An American Carol: Made by the guys behind the Naked Gun movies and one of Leslie Nielson's last (in a bit part). It starts out making fun of Michael Moore and suddenly gets very serious in the middle then silly again. Kelsey Grammar is in it and very good too.

That's not a Christmas movie, is it? I thought it took place around the 4th of July...

I only watched it once. I thought I might like it (being quite a Michael Moore detractor and being a fan of both Leslie Nielson and Kelsey Grammar), but it ended up being almost as bad as a Michael Moore film.

Thanks for the tip. Never heard of it sadly before your post. Just looked it up, sounds like a great movie to watch with my wife:thumbsup

It is a great movie... You will enjoy it this holiday season. :)
For the record... It was the inspiration for the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan film YOU'VE GOT MAIL. Her shop in the film was called The Little Shop Around the Corner. They exchange emails through the whole film, while in the Jimmy Stewart film, it revolves around letters placed in the mailbox.

But definitely check it out!!

I usually like to throw in Star Trek Generations around Christmas. I know there's only the one scene that has anything to do with Christmas, but it came out around Christmas so it brings back some good memories.

... then I put it back on the shelf until next year. :lol

Seconded! I loved BOTH movies!

I thought they should have added a scene in "You've Got Mail" where Tom Hanks is writing an e-mail to Meg Ryan using his Newton Message Pad (and wireless modem) - after they were introduced to each other as rivals, but before Hanks knew Ryan was the one he was corresponding with.

Went to Walmart today and couldn't believe how many cheesy straight-to-video Christmas movies there are.

Speaking of movies in this class,
we like the movie "They Call Me Mrs. Miracle"
with Jewel Staite from Firefly.
Typical schmaltzy Christmas flick with some interesting characters and a happy ending.

Also, the old Claymation Christmas special.
The first time I saw it, the walrus and penguin ballet made me laugh so hard
I had tears in my eyes!

Thumbs up to Trading Places, Die Hard, and Blackadder.:thumbsup

Here's a really abstract one. The League of Gentlemen's christmas special DVD has an extra that I watch every year. Mark Gatiss of Doctor Who fame does a fireside reading to camera of one of the stories in the main christmas special. It's freaking hilarious and also really christmassy in it's own way.

Also, I know I'm deviating away from movies, but three words - Box of Delights.

Putting a vote in for The Night They Saved Christmas from 1984, with Art Cartney as Santa, June Lockhart as Mrs. Claus, and Jaclyn Smith and Paul Le Mat.

Not many of my friends recall it, and it's definitely 'dated' I suppose, but I always enjoyed it.

The plot:

An oil company is exploring two Arctic sites for oil. The needed blasting at the first site rocks Santa Claus' North Pole village. He realizes that any blasting at the second site will destroy his home. He enlists the aid of a woman and her children to convince her husband (who works for the company) that the first site is where the oil they want is. Along the way, Santa explains all his secrets in delivering presents all around the world.
