THE HOBBIT swords

I hope. We have the prop and started on it a while back. Just waiting on confirmation from UC now that the film is out. I know we can do it a lot more accurately than that one, based on the photo I see on their website.

News to me. As far as I know they have no license for weapons. I had heard they were doing foam weapons, but then I saw another company doing Hobbit foam replicas. Wouldn't surprise me though, as it seems the same licenses were given to multiple companies for the same product categories.

The Noble Collection Thorin's Dwarven Swords says its to be 28 inches ... but looking, his sword is as big (maybe lil' bigger) than Balin's Mace ... WETA's Balin's Mace measures in at just shy of 42 inches so I hope if UC does one they make it to scale of an actual person and not a dwarf like NC.

If UC does a full sized Deathless I will get that as well. Was already thinking of making my own out of MDF or styrene using the illustrations in the Chronicles Art Design book.

Ahh, thanks much, I was actually contemplating picking that up. Also now the sword seems even more BA with a name like Deathless. Referring to a previous post in the thread for United Cutlery hopefuls, found a pic of one of those dwarven helms .. I'd totally buy 2 or 3 of those lol. One for hardcore video gaming :lol, one for display, and one to remain boxed lol. As beautiful as it is I'ma pass on Orcrist. I'm aiming to collect the dwarven based stuff.

Yeah, I love that design too. It looks like every Dwarf soldier in Eerebor was wearing that same helm in the film prologue. The armor is beautiful too.

I'd seen one of those on ebay. The look extremely detailed tbh. But they're for LARPing to my understanding so I decided to pass. Waitin' on those UC hopefuls. I like the look of Kili's sword though.

-definitely- subscribing to this thread!

Superkeen on finding a human-scaled Thorin dwarven sword. Dissapointed to see the only one so far from TNC being a good 10" too short (by my math anyway).

Found this nice reference image (dont know the source sorry) so ill be modelling it up tonight. [edit: sorry! dont know how to make the image smaller >.<]

OT but if it wasnt approximately 200cm3 and thus quite dear, i would definitely 3d print one and paint it. Might start a build thread if there isnt one already....hmmmmmmmmm.

That's from the Weta Chronicles book. Trust me, you would not want to pick up a real Deathless sword at 1:1 scale. It would weigh close 10lbs. The ones in the film were polyurethane. A full sized sword, like the United Glamdring replica, which is twice the length, weighs just under 4 lbs.

I am working on the film scale steel bladed versions of the Fili and Kili swords for United and they weigh nearly 5lbs each, and are smaller than Deathless.

Haha, of course. I come in at 5'1" and in need of a bulk up so you wouldnt find me swinging around any legit swords. I made the mistake of making a wrought-iron Keyblade from the Kingdom Hearts game once and thats...well, like you say at a 1:1 scale, you dont want to pick it up. Though a lightweightish material replica of Deathless is what i aim to make and/or aquire as a gift.

The bow on the other hand (that i think kili uses)...thats one i would love for myself :D

Yeah but UC's Battle Axe and Walking Axe of Gimli have some weight too. Deathless couldn't be any worse on weight that that battle axe? Thanks for posting that image by the way, awesome stuff. I may break down and snag that book now. I found myself wondering if any company would tackle Dwalin's Hammer lol. Could you imagine that one? Honestly though, NC's deathless length is primarily why I didn't preorder it. I emailed WETA and recommend Thorin's Vambracers, those would be cool to have too.

*For Mr. Kit Rae: since I mentioned them, do you know what kind of wood the hafts are on the UC Gimli Axes? And how the heads are attached? I was just looking at mine and wondering how they're constructed? < I keep it a hobbit thread now guys just figured he may know and its been buggin' me.

There is a steel rod running the length, with threaded ends. Under the tip cap and pommel cap are the threaded ends. The parts basically are all stacked on this rod and bolted at the ends with nuts. It's all bonded with automotive epoxy, so it's not going to come apart without damage if you intend to modify.

I don't recall the wood we used, but It was probably one of the Elm species used for furniture. There were so many types that factory used I'm not sure the same wood would have been used throughout production.

Try picking up your Gimli Battle Axe, but only by the last 12" of the handle, no farther up. That will give you an idea.

Awesome. Thanks for speedy reply. I don't intend to modify mine, but I did want to get another bearded axe. And, if the haft was ONLY wood, replace it with some more modern and durable. However if the hafts are hollowed I'd imagine that'd make it more difficult. I wanted one functional Gimli Axe. I have all 3 as it is, they're awesome too. I wanted them back when I was in high school and busted my butt collecting them all recently. And The Hobbit has furthered my will for Dwarven culture lol. And now that you mention it, we played the "firemen's game" with the battle axe, hold it, one hand, bottom of the handle, axe head on the floor, arm straight, lift it from the floor and touch your forehead, if anyone else has this axe try. Lot harder than you'd think. Thanks again for the info Mr. Rae, I'd been looking everywhere on the web for those details.

As promised. Better pics of that mace. Still cloudy out in Ga. but enough sun coming through the dining windows to get some decent pics. Enjoy :)

Thanks for sharing pics!

I really love the design of Balin's mace and I hope that United Cutlery will release its own version.
