The Hobbit - starts filming March 21

Good god, of all the things to obsess over. Why would anybody find rationalising this out to be a challenge? The continuity error would be in having the same staff: it's just a bit of wood, not special in itself. And it's actually a 60-year lapse from the events of The Hobbit to those of LOTR. Gandalf uses his staff in a variety of ways, including as a walking aid. Wear and tear, ya know?

He's been in Middle Earth a couple of thousand years. My guess is the landscape's liberally strewn with discarded wizard staffs. :D

My sentiments exactly ;)!

Well, its ok... Maybe noble releases a new staff, I like the old, but my chance to get a staff for my gandalf costume (in far future)....

Damn... I see tons of merchandise coming.... :unsure And it will be expensive...

Love it!

Here's a little thing to get y'all talking:

Some people are in an "up roar" at the fact that Gandalf's staff is different.

But honestly, after all of his adventure-seeking and a 50-year time difference between The Hobbit and LotR, his staff is bound to either organically change, or break. So, I actually really like the change.

I suppose I can understand that people are being picky, however I think it funny it's about the difference in the movies and not the book, which is the true version, that should really be the standard if the issue is accuracy.

If it isn't made a point in the book it really shouldn't be a big issue, the movies are very rarely accurate to the book version and to be wouldn't make a good movie anyway, can you imagine them talking the same as in the book? :lol

I just like seeing what I read in a visual version, it reiterates the reasons why I love the books.

Gandalf actually had two staffs in FOTR, the one he had at the beginning was taken from him by Saruman. When he shows up again, it's a different staff. Very similar, but the top is quite different.

I wonder how this staff would compare to those two?

That's one thing that always bugged me about LOTR. It had to have been an intentional decision, there's no way they would have just "missed" something like that. I mean, it looks like an Elven blade.

The only thing I can think of was to make Frodo's glowing Sting be something more unique, rather than just a smaller version of what Gandalf was already carrying (which is really all it ever was).

I believe for filming purposes, that they chose to not do this for aesthetic reasons. It would first and foremost, take away from Sting, and would have to be an alternate discussion.

"This is Sting! The blade glows blue when Orcs are close!...Oh yeah, Gandalf's sword does the same thing."

So, to keep up continuity, I doubt it will glow...especially since Sting will be featured once more.

I'd hope not. I see a dangerous Lucasesque trend on the horizon if they do that.

"New Ultimate LotR VioletBlu Ray Collector's Director's Extended Edition" with glowing Glamdring and the Fellowship Gollum model replaced with the Two Towers/Return Gollum model.

I think it would have been easy to explain. "Oh those two swords are glowing. Oh yeah elvish blades do that around orcs."

I like that they showed the 3D concept art, and I happen to have a pair of red/blue glasses here. And by golly, it looks great!

I haven't been much for 3D since Avatar, but it looks like they're taking it very seriously, and I might have to make an exception. I hope that the theaters around here can project at 48p, though.

If they do any digital screenings near you, you should be good to go. With all the attention PJ is drawing to the 48fps and the 3D, I wouldn't be surprised if he'd prefer it only being screened digitally. Although, to make it available to a wide audience they'll have to have film copies distributed.

Still, for continuity purposes, I doubt it.

And I too hope that PJ doesn't go back and alter the films -_-. I'm a true-hearted Tolkien fan, and would like to see everything play out on screen, but it can't be done. There are some things I just have to accept.

Now this Evangine Lilly added elf is still buggin' the crap outta me :|.

Well, he already did with the extended versions.

I would argue that adding an additional half hour to an hour of footage is a completely different animal than editing in a new actor or an orc shooting an arrow at Legolas that he leans aside of as he fires back a half-second later.

Meh. God I hope he doesn't. Please take a chapter out of Lucas' book and realize this is a HORRIBLE mistake.

If enough people rebel against it, I'm sure he won't do it. Hence him taking out Arwen in Helms Deep. He pissed off so many people, he digitally edited her out at the last minute.

And a good thing too, that was straight up stupid. Adding the Lothlorien elves was one thing...adding an elf that was supposed to remain between Rivendell and Lothlorien, pining the entire time.....no. Just...no.

Agreed, but we can also agree Jackson has much better taste than that.
